30 ft/lbs seems way high, I have had my cover off a couple times and I just snug them back on with removable thread lock. A couple people have snapped them off, real pain if that happens.

Indeed, the service manual does say 30 ft-lb. Sounds too high to me, too. I used my right-handed torque wrench set on "snug". Never any leaks.

Do what Bertram65 and Rbattelle said. I followed the factory torque setting while replacing the trans pan on my '03 and I snapped off a bolt. When I did the diffs on my '04 I choked the head of the ratchet and snugged them up with no resulting leaks.

I snapped the head of a bolt a few weeks back torquing the diff cover to 30 also. Actually, I used the snug-o-meter for the rest of them and if I had to guess, I'd say it auto-set itself to around 20-25 :)
