Is the difference between the auto's HP and torque and the stick in the copmputer or is it more than that? This is my first post!Awesome site, by the way.

If you are looking at 2001 and newer truck the auto's and 5-speeds are exactly the same-235HP and 460 TQ.

2001 2500HD Quad Cab SLT SB 4x4, HO Cummins, 6-speed, 3. 55 gears, LSD, brightwhite/driftwood, 4w ABS, camper and trailer tow packages, HD transfer case, snow plow prep, group, cab lights, Isspro Boost and Pyrometer gauges mounted on A-pillar, 4" JRE exhaust, BD exhaust brake. 22500 miles as of 11/11/00.

1980 CJ-5, Modified for off-road use, bobbed fenders, 350 TBI, NP435 trans, 4. 56 gears, Dana 300, Dana 44 front, Dana 60 reverse-cut rear axle, ARB air lockers front and rear, 15/35/15 Super Swamper TSL on 10X15 steel rims, Cobra CB, Warn 9000I winch, nerf bars, 1/4" steel rock crawler bumper front and rear, jerri can/spare tire rack, custom roll cage.

I should have been more specific. I have a '99 and I lost 20 Hp choosing the automatic trans. Are they the exact same engines? Are the computers just programmed differently? Thanks, John

Douglas - Regardless of what a book says, you're not going to get as much H. P. or torque to the rear tires with an auto. Sorry. If you don't believe me, start a new post and ask the question

Rocket - Its more than that. More specifically its not the computer at all. There are frictional losses in an auto that are not present in a manual. That accounts for the difference. That's also why a stock D/C transmission (pulling heavy loads) will build up too much heat (frictional loss) and self-destruct.

OK, I'm not so smart. They do measure it at both the crank and rear tires. At the crank, they'll be the same H. P. At the rear tires, there will be a difference. Sorry about the confusion. My assumption (which I still think is true) is that the 235/460 (ETC - manual) was at the rear tires.

I also read somewhere that the auto defaults to 215HP's when floored. Unless you feel lucky get the stick or buy another brand.

I believe the internals are very similar, just the turbo was different. I believe this is what I read in article I saw. I would also suspect the program was different.

In 99 the difference between the engines of the auto and stick was 20 Hp in favor of the stick (measured at the flywheel). I believe the engines are the same, but the ECM is programmed to trim the horsepower by 20 to protect the TC lockup ring in the automatic. Or (to show my ignorance) the ECMs could be the same and there is a very slight difference in the stock injectors.

Or there is someone here who can set us all straight #ad

I don't know about setting anyone 'straight,' but my last '96' Gasser 318 RAM 5-speed with a 'Gibson-Cat-Back' was much faster than a comparable 360 gasser Automatic.
My Y2K 3500 Diesel Auto with an 'EZ' + a boost-elbow added I think about 50[+?] hp and cut my 0-60 times from 16sec to 11 sec. However, in a stupid stop-light race with a Mustang 5. 0 at 6 am this morning, I was totally humiliated... It was like I was going backwards compared to the F*&d Mustang! #ad
I think I need a TST adjustable Box and a BD transmission upgrade!

I beg to differ.
The numbers from the factory are taken from crank. 215hp auto and 235hp for the 5spd.
This is why most trucks will only produce numbers in the high 100's or low 200's when on a chassis dyno... ... .

As far as the difference. I think pre '01 is only programming, but I can't swear by it. I do remember hearing about a smaller turbo on some of the 01. 5's.
