So who actually knows the difference between the two? Not what your cusin's roomate heard is the difference, but who actually knows?

CA-SO rating: 235 hp @ 2700 rpm

US-SO rating: 250 hp @ 2900 rpm

both engines: 460 lb-ft @ 1400 rpm

The California engine has different programming to change the emissions pattern, including the quicker power peak.

Thanks for the info... So would an aftermarket box like an Edge or Bullydog make them equal, or would the CA SO still be under powered to a US-SO?

Bueller?? Bueller???? :p

The Cal also has a catalytic converter. The box will help both but the end result will still be different, with the cal < fed < HO

SO difference

THIS IS THE STATEMENT I RECEIVED FROM POWERMASTERS ON THE SUBJECT.

Summary: ram isb CARB ratings by year

Solution:

Thanks for the email. The primary difference is more retarded timing, which reduces engine efficiency but does lower peak temperature for lower NOx. This also causes increased soot loading of the oil, as the fuel gets quenched by cylinder walls and produces more soot in the oil.

A lot of the exhaust energy is absorbed by the turbo; the increased back-pressure from the converter is not likely much of a penalty.

For the '03 trucks the Cummins web site listed the HP and torque as: SO with CA emmissions 235HP 460FT/Lbs torque, for non CA SO 250HP 450FT/Lbs torque. I looked recently and they have changed it so tht torque is the same, 460FT/Lbs for both just the HP is different. Maybe they made a change to the '04 non CA SO to increase the torque.
