I've been looking on line for a new dually. I have found a few I'm going to look at but can anyone tell me what the difference between a Laramie and a Laramie Longhorn.

Both trucks have the Aisin and 4.10

There's about $7000.00 difference and just wondered what the real difference is.

Truck will be mainly used to tow a 5th wheel that weighs almost 17000 lbs

The 4.10's will work well but based on having both 4.10 and 3.42's I would look for one with AISIN and 3.42's. Don't forget the rear air option!

The difference was enough for me "thinking" I wanted a Laramie but then looked at my Parents LongHorn and could not even consider the Laramie. The interior is by far nicer on the LongHorn as in quality of leather and seat comfort and the materials overall. To me well worth the extra cost.

I would do 3:73 best of both worlds

Have you owned the other two options in a 13 or newer truck? To be clear I have not towed with a 3.73.

The "best of both worlds" is the 3.42's up to 28K with the AISIN. Tow in 5th and solo 6th for the best mileage. 1,750 rpm @ 60 in 5th is perfect. RAM backs up my claim.

I am window shopping now for a 13 and later 3500 and doing aot of research. I wouldn't be towing any faster than 70 and I prefer the lower gears since I would like to back up the hill I live on to get the 14k trailer in the spot as right now that 48re just can't do it. I have 3:73's now.

Yes I saw the thread on the give away . Looks like the way to go. Curious how hefty are those transfer cases pulling and backing 14k ?

I do not believe it is a transfer case issue. The issue is that you can put a lot of strain one a single diff vs splitting between two diffs. So just be careful.

Unless they changed for '17, the main difference between the 2 you mentioned is the 'trim' extras and the leather seats. In the Laramie, the seats are leather trimmed, i.e. the part you sit on is leather, the outsides and seat back side panels are vinyl. The Longhorn has complete premium leather seats. After having a Longhorn, I wouldn't go back to a Laramie if you want leather interior.

I prefer the 4.10s. They are easy to live with on the highway with the double overdrives of the 68RFE or Aisin AS69RC.

Well these threads are so full of opinions and information! I think both are valuable and worth your time reading them all! I just recently bought a 2017 Mega-Cab, DRW, AISIN WITH 3.73's 4x4 Laramie Longhorn...have a little over 6,000 miles on mostly pulling our 39 ft., 15,000 lbs 5 the wheel from Phoenix to Houston to Tulsa to Colorado Springs and then to here...Rocklin, CA.. I initially looked for a truck with the 4.10's as we have sold our house and are planning on "full-timing" for the next several years and wanted a "towing beast"!... but was going to have to order my truck if I wanted the 4.10's.....so I bought the 3.73'swith a little trepidation! As it turns out, I am very happy with my "compromise"! As others have stated, it really depends on how you drive. When I am pulling I drive at 65-68 mph and my rpms are about 1750-1800...perfect? If I am in city traffic I paddle shift down to 5th and at 60 mph I'm around 1850-1900 rpms....perfect? When I am not towing, I drive around 65-70 mph...not much different as I am not in that big of a hurry! If I spent my towing time at 55-60 mph, then I think the 4.10's would be my choice...and if I cruised at 75-80 I would look at the 3.42's! So unless your trailer demanded the 4.10's...you can pick the gears that fit your driving style! Options! One other opinion to throw out there....I have been pulling stock trailers, travel trailers since the early '80's with half tons, 3/4 tons and my last '07 Dodge was a one ton....all SRW. Now that I am full-timing and not just occasionally pulling....actually "living" in this truck and trailer EVERYDAY...I went with a DRW....what a difference and improvement!!! Hard to believe the difference! I would highly recommend a DRW if you are pulling that 5th more than just occasionally! Good luck with your search...you're gonna love that truck no matter what your final choice!

One over the reasons I'm looking for one with the 4.10 is because I'm probably going to park my big truck and use it for a hot shot truck some

The think there are other things like Nav that are standard on the Longhorn and an option on the Laramie.

Looking at DRW's soon and all this info is just what I needed! Waiting also to see what the 2018 brings to the table.
Will be selling the 02 in my sig when the new purchase occurs.

Wife is not happy with the drone in cab. She has not said anything about it for 15 years..now it is an issue. Truck is loud, especially with a load. Nearing retirement and just looking ahead. 3500 DWR is in our future.
