Gentlemen,

Does the V-10 use the same transmission as us or is it a completely different model?

Would it be possible to direct bolt-up a V-10 trans into a CTD?

Thanks in advance.

From what I've read in the FSM and other sources, they both use the same auto. trans.

Now about the bolt pattern,I couldn't tell ya.

I have often been puzzled by the V10 and the CTD using the same trannie. Why does a 230HP CTD tear up trans faster than a 300HP V10? I know what has been explained to me but it still makes me wonder about the hype of the V10... ... ... ...

The transmission's are designed for gas engines, so the CTD isn't able to spin it at it optimal rate, fluid heats, things break.

Barry, my thinking is that the low end tourqe of the Cummins would be credited for the failures on the auto equipped trucks.

Our 1996 V-10 3500 was rated 300 BHP @ 4000 RPM and 450 ft-lb torque @ 2800 RPM. Compare this with the Cummins of your choice. Even if it's an earlier Cummins that was rated lower than 450 ft-lb torque, chances are the RPM at which peak torque was produced was 1600 RPM or less - the high torque at low RPM characteristic of the Cummins is much harder on the transmission than the high RPM (relatively speaking) V-10.

We towed heavy 5vers with our 1996 3500 V-10/automatic and never had any transmission problems.

The reason why I ask is that the old lying bag of **** that I purchased my truck from told me that way back at 40k he blew the transmission, then the dealer installed a V-10 transmission (not knowing any better), then it blew right away because it was for the V-10, and then the dealer put the "right" one in (the current transmission I have).

Also, I have a fresh data sticker under the hood talking about the re-flash and they wrote 46RE on the sticker. :eek:

So here I am looking at potential aftermarket mods/or wholesale change-out and I don't know if there's even such a thing as a 46RE or V-10 transmission but knowing my luck I'd take the truck to get a good aftermarket transmission and they'd tell me I couldn't core-exchange it because it wasn't a apples-to-apples swap, or just as bad take it to someone for rework and discover the same thing (after it's all apart). :mad:

If they put a 46RE behind your Diesel no wonder it blew, the biggest engine it came with was the 360 gasser. If it is a "v-10" transmission its a 47RE same as the diesel gets.

The TSB reflash was only done less than a year ago (right before I bought the truck). Is there a way to crawl up under and look at a code on the transmission to tell i. e. is 47RE embossed in the side somewhere like our engine block code?

Thanks again for the help!

Transmission identification numbers are stamped on the driver side of the case flange just above the oil pan gasket (just below the TV lever). There will be a 9 digit part number, a space, a 4 digit build date, a spave, and a 4 digit serial number.

4 = 4 forward speeds

6 = strength of trans. (1-9, higher number, stronger trans. )

R = Rear wheel drive

H=Hydraulic controlled, E = Electronic controlled shift

I'm missing something here. Crawled up under the truck and pulled the numbers. I can't make heads of tails out of what they were saying the numbers meant from the link above. I didn't see the same number of digits they were talking about. I'm not seeing the 9 digit code they mention, the build date code, the "R" for real wheel drive, or the "E" for electronic controlled.

I found the stamped numbers above the lip of the pan and in addition, there are 2 different stickers on the transmission with codes/verbage on them.

Stamped #s: PK 52119828AB 3229 6625

Barcoded sticker on the rear of the trans says “New Process Gear” and has the following #s:

52118158 AB184775

Barcoded sticker above where the stamped #s are (almost to the top of the trans):

1st set of numbers: TPK 323956625

2nd set of numbers: P52119828AB

Went across the street and pulled the #s from my neighbors 01 and his read as follows (his numbers that differed from mine are in red):

Stamped #s: PK 52119851AB 0120 6600

Barcoded sticker on the rear of the trans says “New Process Gear: and has the following #s:

P52118158 AB868423

Barcoded sticker above where the stamped #s are (almost to the top of the trans):

1st set of numbers: TPKTKO120566

2nd set of numbers: P52119851AB

Thanks in advance to anyone that can make head/tails out of this for me. Again, just want to verify that I actually have a 47 RE in there and not anything else fishy from the previous owner.
