fuel bleed back

Very first timer question

Ok I'm definately showing my severe lack of knowledge here as I am still "Diesel Dumb" But I'm learning.

Ok my question is what is the difference between a wastegated and a non-wastegated turbine housing?

On Piers site a 14cm Non-wastegated housing was $175, and a 16cm Non-wastegated housing was $150. Although a 14cm Wastegated turbine housing is $425:eek:

So what's the difference? I talked a very little bit about this with Daniel @ BMD's grand opening, and still didn't comprehend much.

What is the effect of blocking off the wastegate? Can it hurt the motor? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

a wastegate is a bypass for the exhaust. It allows you to use a smaller housing (which spools quicker) without choking the top end power (causing high egts). wastegates are very useful. It helps to keep the turbo efficient. After a turbo hits a certain boost ( about 35psi for the hx35) it isnt very effective to try to get more boost. Blocking the wastegate will make more boost. You only need more boost if you have more fuel. If you reach more than 20 or so psi you will throw an engine code unless you have a boost fooler (not sure if this applies to a 97) . I reach 42 psi daily. http://http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/turbo_faq.htm Answers many of your questions.

What you do with your wastgate is dependent on what you are trying to accomplish. Which turbo you use is dependent on the amount of fuel you are delivering. The reasons for a turbo change are to lower egts or to have a quicker spooling turbo. What is your goal?

got smoke, what do you mean you removed the "rack stop?" Are you talking about the AFC housing?

Unless you add more fuel, you really don't need more boost so don't block the wastegate. At stock fueling, blocking the wastegate won't hurt anything, but it really won't help anything. You will probably only see 26-28psi if you block the wastegate which is well within the efficiency realm of the stock turbo. Making boost over 34psi starts to exceed the efficiency range of the stock turbo which does not do any justice to your EGTs. If you increase your fueling level without air side mods, you will soon find this out.

Marc, yeah Daniel took my rack stop out of my AFC housing where I could live up to my forum name.

As far as the question goes, I wasn't planning on blocking my wastegate. I only wanted to learn more about what it did.

BOMBing won't start for me till I have to give Peter a call for a SBC. Daniel wouldn't move my plate when he did my rack stop because I told him I didn't want to slip my clutch. After I get a SBC in there then its BOMB's away!Oo.

got smoke, you don't have to worry about slipping your stock clutch until you are over 300 RWHP. I have a #11 TST plate slid forward and had no problems with stock clutch slip. I went to the SB because a new turbo and big injectors are on the way. I would recommend a #11 before a clutch and put the AFC housing back together unless you only want to see black behind you;) . Enjoy your bombing!
