I currently have a '12 Laramie 4wd short box crew cab 3500. I spend the vast majority of my time driving empty, but have a slide in camper that I use 2-3 times a year that weighs close to 3000# ready to go. That's what forces me to a one ton. I've been very happy with the truck, but my mileage has been in the 15's empty and I'm really interested in a '13 or '14 that has DEF instead of the way-to-frequent regen cycles my '12. My understanding is that I can expect a 2-3 mpg improvement with a DEF truck over my '12.

My dealer has a 2013 Laramie Laredo that I think could be had for a significant discount. My question is what major changes were made to the '14's and would it be a mistake to get a '13? My intention is to keep this truck for a long time. I had a '98.5 and honestly, the only thing I miss is the mileage.

Thanks - any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I owned a 2012 3500 max tow(dually-4:10's etc 68 RFE) that required oil changed every 3-3500 miles. Most of my driving is city. I was getting 12-15MAX MPG.

I now, with my 2013 2500 SRW 4x4 CC (which is a 2012 3500 4x4 cc SRW for all intents and purposes) at 20K am showing on the EVIC 20MPG as of today for city driving. Thats started after towing my 16.9K trailer 500 miles round trip one week ago. Has not dropped down to less then 19.2 thus far.

DEF has been a non issue until towing. Then it seems to burn DEF. I'm very happy with the truck and it tows at MAX GCVWR just fine, 25K with 3:42 gears.

I am currently at 6800 miles on last oil change and the EVIC is saying I'm good for 58% more miles which would put me near 15K. Way AHEAD money on oil. I change at 7500 rotella syn 5-40. Even at 7500Miles I'm money ahead from the 2012 on oil, and fuel MPG too. the biggest downfall is the 68RFE shift pattern from 2012- 2013 changed and now has a "flare of 2-400 RPM" between upshifts from 4-5th to 6th gear, TCC unlock to lock etc.Doesn't hurt anything but sounds pathetic for a 52K truck.

I had a 2012 2500 slt reg cab my Mpg's were 11-18 city / highway. It would scream change it's oil every 1800 miles and would load the oil with fuel. 12 qts in 15-17 out every time. I got fed up after a year of ownership and bit the bullet for a 2013 that the dealer had on the lot the truck in my sig. All I can say is wow! I knew the Mpg's would be better 16-22 city/ highway. But the power and the fact that the oil does not need to be changed for 12,000-15,000 miles.. The 13 drives like my 12 did as far as ride. I have yet to drive a 14 nor do I want to. I'm very happy even with the higher monthly payments the money that I'm saving on lube oil and fuel more than off set the additional cost.

Make sure to get the Aisin transmission. I do not see a 2013 3500 at any of the NW Wa dealers. They are discounting 2014 pretty well now. Chris

Here is one that I have been watching down in Kingman, Az
Wow Chris, that truck has your name all over it!

I know, it is trying hard to be the last 2013 standing!!!

If we had the money we would go get it. Seems that after the boat is got, then we might get a new truck. Chris

Thanks gents - I've suspected there would be an improvement over my '12 but that seems like a bigger difference than I anticipated. The oil change angle is good as well - as it happens, my oil change alert came on today just shy of 5000 miles - the best it's done to date.

My biggest question is - what changes were made for '14 and is it worth holding out for one or is a '13 effectively the same as a '14?

Thanks -

Greg

The biggest differances between the 2013 and the 2014 is in the suspension. The 2014 has coil springs in the rear! The 2013 has leaf in the rear!

That's in the 2500's (3/4 ton). The 3500 (1 ton) still uses leaf springs.

I just noticed another subtle difference between the 2013 and 2014 models...

For the 2013 model year, only the 2500 has a TPIM system with EVIC display. The 3500 lacks it.

For the 2014 model year, both the 2500 and 3500 have a TPIM system with EVIC display, but only the 2500 has a low pressure warning. The 3500's system is informational only.

You are correct!!! I was just looking at the 2500! My BAD!!! Sorry for the wrong input!

The 13s and 14s are very similar except as noted in the above posts. I had always had 2500s but stepped up to the 3500 and got the Aisin. Glad I did.

Also the front suspension, the 4 bar is gone and it looks much stronger underneath. I think the front axel disconnect is a 2014 only item as well.

Didn't '13 2500's have the '10-'12 frame (essentially same as 03-09, other the WB) and the '14 2500's have the new 50K psi frame?

13+ 3500's have the new frame.

The 2014 2500, has a totally new new frame. Rear shocks go into the frame, cross members are massive and front frame is revised to accept the new suspension.. Looks pretty good.
