Hey guys... I know the whole airbox subject has been done to death, but I was thinking...

What would be the pro's and con's to doing a psmbuick style mod to a free-flow filter such as the AfE?

Despite the ouch factor of cutting into an expensive housing... it would seem to give the best of both worlds... better flow and cold air intake, since a lot of people want the cold air only intake, but don't like the flow of the factory filter. (I know, some feel the better flow of the AfE style is at the cost of filtration... I'm not trying to re-hash that debate)

Anyway... let me know some thoughts!

I'm not sure what psmbuick did, but I drilled a bunch of holes in my filter housing. I figured it I needed to cover it up for some Emissions thing later down the road or whatever i could just duct tape it.

i have a 04 stock box with a airraid flat filter and did my own mod by cutting a 4" hole from the bottom and running 2 foot pc of pcp pipe up from the bottom , nice cheap mod

I believe psmbuick.com uses the AFE ProGuard-7, drop-in filter. If memory serves me right, they do flow a bit more air than the stock filter, according to his tests.

well if you buy the lower box its 65. 00 i think and the upper part is 99. 00 , you can build it yourself for less than $ 25. 00 , don t get me wrong there product looks good and i m sure it a nice piece but save the money and have the pride of building it yourself and if you can t , then by there setup all complete

I just checked the psmbuick.com website & the "Kit" prices are now $99-139.

I agree, you can build one cheaply. The one thing that I like about the psmbuick product is the heavy-duty flexible tubing, he uses. I havent been able to find that stuff, here. The metal, lower plate that the lower part of the tubing connects to is a nice feature, also.

Whether you buy it or build it, I think it's a good idea.

I have an AFE PG-7 system in my '03 & it didn't give any performance increase with the engine in it's stock form. In fact, I believe it lost a very slight amount of power.

I wish I had known about the cold air intake modification or the psmbuick.com system before I bought the AFE System.

I have the PSM airbox mod ($109) on my '04. It is a well designed piece that uses high quility materials. I looked at doing the "Home Depot" pvc mod, but didn't really have the time to play around with my truck (I have little free time and every piece is valuable). Everything fit as advertised and it does reduce EGT's. I'm using a stock fleetguard filter and got about 75° reduction. I figure if I need more later, I'll do an AFE drop in replacement, but I know I can use stock (cheap and available) filters. It's doesn't have the "wow" factor when you open the hood (other than the nifty decal on the box), but it functions well.

I'd spend the $109 again if I had to.

I did the DIY PSM upgrade. It cost about $25 from Home Depot and took about an hour. I put the new drop in EA Amsoil air filter in as well. The whole setup is about all I can really see needing unless you are planning on running some serious HP. I don't see ANY pressure drop across the filter until I am at 10 PSI boost, and even then the pressure drop is very small and not enough to pull in the filter minder even up to 35 psi boost.

Thanks for all of the replys... but...

I started the thread to see if anyone has done a "PSMBuick" type mod to an "AfE" type housing and filter, to have the increased flow of a cone filter, but cold air intake of a psm style mod.

Thanks!
