I needed more CFM than the stock filter provided since #8 plate was installed, as boost went from 21 to 32 PSI. Filter minder pulls down to 20+" H20 w/new stock filter. Ordered one from Mcmaster Carr, cylindrical with open ends, 8"O. D. X 11" long, 5 micron rated, polyester media. I fabbed alum. ends with a stainless "cage" inside to allow centering as well as end plate wingnut holdown. Results follow.

Before:

71* ambient temp

10 PSI boost

750* EGT (pre turbo)

Lots of smoke at "launch"

Minder pulls down to 20+" H20

After:

73* ambient temp

10 PSI boost

700* EGT (pre turbo)

Appears to be less smoke at "launch"

Minder pulls down to 10" H20

*These reads are also with "stomped" to max boost to check minder pulldown.

So I got more CFM, as shown by the minder but other than that little change. Mileage check will tell more.

Minder on my BHAF......

Never got it to move yet. That's with the AH19037 filter. Wasn't sure if it was working so I took it out and sucked it down and it stayed overnight. Must be OK.

I have 6K miles on the filter now through some pretty dusty job sites and it's still working great. Even with my heavy truck, climbing some long grades I've never got the EGT's over 1200°.

See what you get

Garrett, Do me a favor, next time you remember go to 10 psi boost and see what the EGT's are. I get 700* (pre turbo).

Also, the reason I did not go to the original BHAF was due to the fact that micron rating as well as application was never known. While its success is obvious, a perhaps its personal thing to have to know all about it.

I did a post on microns a while back... . 5 microns = . 0002" (2 tenths of a thousanth"). A micron is one millionth of a meter, why does it matter? Gotta make sure Mr. turbo is on a nice, clean diet!

Now, if your minder never pulls down you have either less max. boost (I doubt it!), or greater CFM and or lower micron rating on the filter. Whats your max. boost?

5 micron may be overkill... . nobody seems to know. I have talked to Donaldson as well as Baldwin and neither gets back to me on micron ratings.

I,ve never been able to get a mic size out of the automotive filter mfgrs. The last time I talked to Fleetguard, I found out why. They use a test dust that's made up of several size particles to assimulate road dust. Also for some reason, not all filter sizes have test results(cfm/static) at the same initial and final points. Go figure! They told me mine is 98. 5% efficient at the start point and 99. 9% at the change point. Air filters get better as they load up but they said only air filters work like that. Go figure again! They couldn't explain why. I would think that any media type filter would get better as it loads up. That's what I get for thinking!! Craig

Craig, I think your thinking's right. Think the guy you talked to didn't know what he was talking about. I've dealt with all kinds of filters filtering many different materials. They all clog up faster as they progress due to the trapped debris forming a finer filter. Why would there be a bypass valve in some oil filters if this isn't true? Could it be this is what he was talking about? You must of talked to an engineer, it would be better to talk with someone with common sense.
