Before I removed my starter (89 engine) I searched around the forums and three starter mounting bolts were mentioned.

When I got to the actual job there were two bolts, one top one below. The flange had only two holes, so it isn't like a bolt fell out.

Were the starters changed after 89, or is mine some special situation soloution that was added. The bell housing has a third hole.

This engine is on a freight liner chassis.

Thanks, any thoughts.

( I removed it because the starter would grind from time to time, and I figured the contact points were bad but heavy contact points were there when I opened it up.

The last person to work on the starter had put a ground cable connection between the starter flange and the bell housing and I think/hope that may have misaligned the starter caused the grinding. )

Thanks for that. I was going to call the local school bus garage and ask them.

Except for the two hole flange the starter looks to be the same as the Dodge/Cummins.

Maybe someone substituted. Off a 4bt? Mystery.

My brother has an old Cummins 5. 9 parts book I'll have to take a ride over and try to solve the mystery.
