I have never in my life had any cover glued on like the front differential cover on my 2001 2500. I could not get a chisel to pop the cover loose, and even tried an air chisel.

I finally removed the lubricant with a suction gun, as I was afraid I would destroy the cover if I continued chiseling.

Is there some trick I should know?

The way I have always done them, is to remove all the bolts, except for one at the top, which I leave loose, then give the cover a few good hits with a soft faced mallet, and it should pop right open, and the top bolt will keep the cover from falling off completely.

P. S. where in Iowa is Norway?

I am with you on your method. I have used it myself. I used a big, heavy, rawhide mallet, striking it pretty hard, and quite a few times. I did all I thought I could without putting a dent in it. I did not budge at all. I have never seen anything like it.

Norway is southwest of Cedar Rapids.
