My truck has factory 4. 10s and limited slip. I changed the gear lube the other day and now my truck makes clicking noises around turns. It sounds like the powertrax locker in my buddy's Grand Cherokee, only quieter. I did notice while in the diff that it looked like a locker in there. I never really noticed the noise before I changed the gearlube. How much noise is normal? Would a lube change make it louder? The old lube was clean when I drained it.

If the oil you put in is not rated for a limited slip you will need to add the friction modifier. I am guessing that you are hearing the plates catching and releasing. I used a limited slip oil and still needed to add the modifier. I never heard any noise but I did feel it chattering a little. Some of the LSD units are tighter than others and will need more modifier to work properly than others. Hope this helps.

By all means use the friction modifier, ASAP!

I just rebuilt a Dana-70 that had completely eaten the spider gears, side gears, and all of the friction plates inside the LS carrier... the ring/pinion was fine, but all new stuff to the tune of $900. 00 wholesale price from F*rd (it's an ambulance... ) was reason enough to use the Mopar friction modifier (some say it's the best... ) The friction plates had stuck together and worn themselves out which ended being a chain reaction destroying the other hardware.

Do about 25-30 "figure-eights" in a parking lot to get the stuff all lubed up.

I soaked the friction plates in the modifier for about 4 hours turning them as if they were steaks I was marinating. This is easy to do with the whole carrier assembly apart on the bench.
