About a year ago my differential lost a shim and wiped out the bearings. I found it before the gears were ruined.
The rebuilder told me any problems I had were agrivated by using 80-90 synthetic oil and that I should use 75-140 since I an hauling a 11,000lb trailer.
I am reay for service again. Can I use synthetic 80-90 in it (which I have) or should I stick with the 75-140?

Pease check the archives and older topics. This has been discussed at great length. One topic was Mag Hytec cover on a 2500 or something like that. The quality of oil is probably more important for you in your application. 75 wt at the low end is important if you are below 0 deg. F. I used 75-140 Torco with good results. www.torcoracingoils.com For above that temp, I am now using LE607 from Lubrication Engineers. You can get it from www.maghytec.com along with their excellent covers that add capacity, raise the available lube level, have a magnetic drain plug, and a dipstick.

Dana has been fairly sloppy in setting up diffs over the past several years, and your description of the problem is such that I rather doubt your problem related to lube.

I already have the mag hytec cover. thaqt is how I found the problem. The dipsticks are great. I was using 80-90 for quite about 14k miles. When I put the cover on I went to 75-90 for 16k miles, both synthetic.
What weight are you using now?
I am in S. CAl so I seldom get below 40 and only got to 15 once.

Hey Grouchrc!

I have just installed a Mag-Hytec diff. cover along w/ Amsoil 75W-90 Series 2000 oil. I really can't comment on oil weight or performance because I just switched to this combo. Check out (search) the thread titled "Rear end lube" from the 12 valve forum (dated 2-13 thru 2-27-2000) there's a ton of good info in this one also, along w/ J. Donnelly's recommendation.

Question: When I pulled the OEM cover off my Dana 70 there was a thin, almost like gage stock mat'l, curled piece of metal adhearing to the magnet on the inside of the cover. Could this be an extremely thin shim that was eaten somewhere in the diff? How do you know when you lose a shim?

Thanks! Keeno
