Over three years ago, 30,000 miles, I replaced the fluid in differential with Amsoil 75W90 series 2000 oil. Now I am begining to get slight seeping around cover. I check often and it has never had the slightest seep. I used Permatex Ultra Gray. Does Amsoil desolve Ultra Gray over time? Should I have used something else. At the time I replaced fluid, every one was saying the ultra gray was the stuff to use. And yes, I have checked for bolt tightness and it isn't fill plug leaking.

It is just your lucky day:D Thats what I used when I did mine in the past. Son did his 99 several years ago and its still dry. If it ain't dripping I would not worry about it. Just wash it off when you wash the truck. I think it was on the 00 I had quite a few months after I changed it there was a slight seepage. You could see where it was seeping when it got dust on it but it was dry to the touch. Just did not look good to me. So I took it off again and cleaned it up again. This time I used the black color(don't think that made a difference)but thats what I used. This time I cleaned it better, wiped it off with solvent, put the black on and let it cure some before I put the cover on. Then I let it set a day before I put oil in it.

I have MagView diff covers, front & rear, and I also use the Amsoil 75W-90 gear lube in both diffs. I use the Ultra Black high temp RTV, also on my FastCoolers on the transmission.

Only once in the last 2 years have I noticed a possible leak from somewhere near the rear diff. The entire thing was covered with a slight film of some type of oil or lube, as well as the axle tube, about halfway out from the pumpkin to the wheels. I wiped everything off as dry as I could with a rag. That was about a month ago. I loosened the fill plug to check that my rear diff wasn't dry, it was still right up to the fill hole.

Since that day, I have not seen the slightest sign of any seeping what so ever. I hate not being able to track leaks down, as then I am paranoid, wondering what is about to let go on me

Not sure it matters what flavor...

I have change my rear differential at least half a dozen times, 5sp almost as many, front differential maybe four time.

I have used the orange high temp stuff, the ultra black stuff, the pretty blue stuff and one other brand. I have never had a leak, seep, or the slightest hint of a leak.

THe winter summer extreme tempurature swings (-30 to +120) really make for oil leaks.

I use lots of brake cleaner and then alittle more.

I don't think it is the sealant.

I have only used Amsoil in the differentials.

Orange or Gray

I have used both the orange & gray permatex and never had a leak. I always try to use the highest temperature rated stuff I can get my hands on. Before reassembly, make sure you've removed all of the old sealant and I always clean both surfaces with acetone or MEK. After assembly, I let it sit for 24 hrs before refilling.

Been pretty lucky so far.

No problems here with the gray Permatex High Temperature RTV. Of course, I'm running Royal Purple, not Amsoil - maybe that's why! ;) :D

Maybe the trick to it is getting all the old gasket off, cleaning it good, letting it dry some before you put the cover on and the letting it cure 24 hrs. before you put oil in it. I'm sure some RTV are better than others. Next time I think I will try some of that

Permatex Anaerobic Flange Sealant as suggested by illflem.
