i want to change the gears in my truck, but i've never done it. do y'all know of someone in east texas that would walk me through this? i want to do the wrenching, but i need some technical guidance.

i'd also drive to austin to meet up with someone.

we can work out some type of monetary compensation, too. i'm not trying to get free work done or anything. i just want to learn it on top of changing the gears.

Changing gears is not just as simple as pull the old, in with the new. There is shimming, lash and tolerances to keep in mind. I've rebulit motors and transmissions but I leave the rear ends to the pros. My $. 02

I agree with Shorty, I have rebuilt many rear ends and it's quite technical and if you have never had anything to do with it, it might be wise to let someone who knows what they are doing get the job done. There are special tools required also or at least a real good feel that comes from doing many of these things. Sure you can do it if you indeed have someone right there to guide you along.

cp98 and scott,

that is exactly what i am looking to do. i know it is very technical and difficult. i know that i do not know enough about it. that is why i want help. after i learn how, i will be able to help someone else.

i have a lead on a guy in the area. now all i need to do is convince him to help me. i just figured there might be some tdr people out here that could either help or steer me in the direction of someone who could.

farm it out

I'm having my 3. 54's changed to 4. 10's and found that with the case change, the labor is only about 20-25 percent of the cost.

Not worth the price of the parts to take a chance on premature

wear or broken parts.

I'll send mine to the guy who does it every day for a living.

My . 02 worth.

I replaced all the brgs. with some help from a pro with the big tools. The right tools made all the difference! Check the old TDRs. I think it might be issue 24 with some good info. You MUST have the shim kits or varied shimstocks to do the shimming. Craig
