What all is diffrent between the stick version of a 12valve engine and the auto version? If the year matters it's a 97. Also what would happen if you put an engine meant for a stick in front of an auto? Thanks.

kaffine krazed,

In 96 (includes 97 thru 98 12 valves) Horse power was increased more than 94-95 's.

Manual trans CTD hp=215, tor= 440.

Auto trans CTD hp=180, tor= 400.

The manual trans can take more torque in lower gears than auto.

Yes a 215 hp engine could go in front of auto but there are easier ways, such as putting 215 pump on CTD or adding hp fuel plate and putting in larger delivery valves (191's). (The latter is the least expensive).

When you add horses extra torque comes with it, so boost /egt guage a must, also beefing up auto trans would be benefical since extra hp/torque can cause major failures (torque convertor, clutch(s), ... , when the torque convertor clutch goes the material gets into everything and messes up alot of components in trans). You can rebuild the trans right the first time or rebuild it many times.

I'm not thinking of putting a manual trans engine in front of an auto. The reason I asked is I've got a truck that the engine was replace and has not run right since it seems to have a miss. I've already tested every thing in the fuel system tried diffrent fuel unbolted the torque converter disconnected the exaust checked compression and pulled the head and changed the fuel filter. I can't find anything wrong with the engine. I also have not been able to isolate the miss to any one cylinder I've tried cracking injector lines and using a raytek to measure egt for every cylinder. I have found out that the engine is made for a manual trans but the truck is an auto. I don't see how that could cause a miss though. Now I'm wondering if it is a balance problem with the engine because it has a flex plate instead of a flywheel on the back or if the engine was just balaced wrong causing it to feel like it has a miss.

kaffine krazed, that is a good point to remember about balancing. Are these engines internal or external balanced? Since you know the engine is not original, you may find other items that do not belong on your engine. I have read posts here about using forklift or marine power plants in these trucks for highway use. Hopefully you don't have a conglomeration of parts on your engine. Sorry I can't help you with the problem at hand, I am new to diesels myself. Best of luck.

kaffine krazed,

OK as I recall some engines with larger injectors (370 hp) have a stumble or miss but that is if the owners put injectors without adding fuel plate for extra fueling. These are 160/180 hp engines( or I should say injector pumps).

Do you know which injector pump you have 160/180/215?

These would be interchangeable between 12 valve engines.

The previous owner mite of put the 180 pump on from original engine.

Do you know if the oem fuel plate has been changed over for a higher hores power one?

370 hp or other injectors been added?

Also if horse power was increased as I have read its a good idea to put a new damper with larger diameter.

But if it is a 215 hp engine it should have the larger damper on already. ( info on damper's in archives).

You mite want to check out archives for stumble or miss. I know I have read threads on it.
