here's the prob i have ... if i put in 12qt's of oil thats 11 in the crank and 1 in the filter my dip sitck read's 1 qt low so i through 1 more qt in and she's happy ... what is this truck suppose to hold???? thank you in advance Jason
Mine is the same as Matt S's truck. I buy 4 gallons of Rotella and put 3 in the engine and part of the fourth in and the the rest of the fourth goes behind the seat. My bosses 1991 D-250 was the same way. Hope that helps.
the oil capacity is 12 qts with filter. Any thing more is too full regarless what dipstick reads. Mine reads about 1-1 1/2 qts low also so i put different mark on stick for full and add oil mark
I am like the rest of the guys, I have to put 1 extra quart in, to get it on the full mark. It hasn't hurt anything. I have 246,000 plus miles on it, at 5,000 mile oil changes, it is very rarely off the full mark, when the service is do.
Yeap, the (2) First Gen's that I change oil in regularly that have the same tendency... . I dump in 3 gallons and a bit more to hit the full mark.
What I find ironic is that the Second Gen guys have a similar problem w/ their trucks reading full @ 11 quarts and there's a new dipstick to correct the problem. There's a posting on the 12 valve/engine forum discussing the problem currently. Read about it here: www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23812
Question: Do the First Gen & Second Gen trucks share a common oil pan?
Same thing with mine 12 plus 1 and the stick shows full. It's about time for my 23rd change and I have never used more than 1/2 a quart between 6000 mile oil changes.
Thirteen total quarts in my truck puts the oil at the maximum level.
If by 1 quart low you mean half way between the low and high marks then the engine is not really low on oil at all. That is the nominal full position. The two lines mean max. and min. so any level between them, or even right on either of them, is acceptable. For off-road I make sure the level is right at the max line.
mark93 thank you with the recommended 12 qt's it's at the min. mark on the stick... ... another thing when is the best time to check the oil lever..... before start up. . right after a run... 20 min after a run?????
Since our trucks are rated for 12 Qts, that is what I put in. Filling the filter and putting the rest in the case lands the level right at the E in S A F E on my stick after start up. Not at the absolute max, but good enough for me. As long as it dosen't move down or up.
On the first Gen. motors (89 thru 93) the "Full" mark is 1" below the bottom of the block (pan gasket surface) , on the second Gen. the "Full" mark is 2" below the bottom of the block.
The trend seems to be to lower the oil level to create less "oil drag" from the crank hitting the oil- also less oil foaming.
Maybe better fuel milage - these days I guess every little bit counts.
