I'm getting oil coming out of the dipstick tube. The truck is 200 miles away and I haven't looked into the cause yet. I'm hopeing the breather is plugged but fear that might not be the case. The truck is a 94 auto, 913 pump, 370 injectors, #10 plate, with stock turbo. If the breather is clear what should I look for next? Any ideas or suggestions welcomed.

Rowdy,

It Sounds like you have too much turbo drive pressure. Does it only do it when you put your foot into it?

Unfortunately, the first thing to come to my mind is that you have a piston that has a hole in it allowing the boost to blow out of the breather. A broken ring would do about the same thing but by looking at your signature, high EGT's seem like a good possibility.

You should be able to put your thumb over the end of the hose and feel a pulsing that would correspond to the bad cylinder's compression stroke.

The next thing would be if you have an internal water leak from a head gasket or oil cooler that allowed a lot of coolant to overfill the crankcase. A quick dipstick check would reveal that.

I'm hope I'm wrong, good luck and post what you find.

That happened to me when my turbo bearing failed, thus my name Runaway Ron. Pulloff the hose on the boost side of the turbo and see if there is any oil residue. If so you will need to replace your turbo. I wish I had known it would have saved my engine. Just a thought Ron

How much oil ? Some blow by under load with what you have done is ok. How many miles? If the engine does not miss you most likey do not have one cylinder at fault. These engines do not have a positive crank case system so under load more blow by is created and with engine mods even more. Gas engines have vacum and use a pcv valve that creates a vacum on the crank case and reburns the blow by. All engines have blow by and on the cummins thier is no vacum so it find the easy path out if your dip stick is not sealing tight this will also can be a cause. If you ever watch the diesel tractor pulls look and the bottom of the engine during the pull and you will see what looks like a high pressure line that blow out , that is the engine crank case pressure. Hope this helps and ps my does the same thing.

I picked up the truck. I pulled the dipstick and put a hose over the tube running into a catch can. I also pulled the oil filler cap and put a length of 3/4 heater hose in the tube with some duct tape holding it in place. The hose vents below the crankcase. I have about 400 hundred miles like this with some full throttle runs. Both catch can and heater hose are completely dry, not even any mist of oil. I haven't checked the factory breather for being plugged yet. Just updating for those that posted with help.

hi rowdy i have seen this before not with this engine but with other diesels they would run fine even under a lode and then they would start to pore oil out of the breather and then the oil would stop comeing out of the breather so i tore the engine down for a rebuild and found a cracked compression ring i rebuilt the engine and it ran great, i think what was going on was as the engine was running the cracked ring would open up and let compression get by into the crankcase and then would close back up and seal not leting compression get by, like i said i have seen this, this is not a guess but i hope it is something else so it does not cost so much to fix let us know what you find good luck and take care:(

Mine started blowing oil out the dipstick tube when a seal in the turbo let go and the boost was pressurizing the crankcase. It would also leave a trail on the ground from the breather tube. It would only do it in 5th gear under high boost.
