I am told that trucks built in ladder 2003 and released as year model 2004 (not 2004. 5) had EGR systems in calif. The manual for this early 2004 (low output,235 hp) in calif has normal oil change intervals set at 3500 as opposed to all other models starting at 7500 miles. .

A technician at cummins replied (swears) that there was never a 2003 or 2004 released with EGR systems. . Not even for calif. If this is the case (and we know EGR would propagate sooting and soiled oil) then why would oil change cycles be so short for this model??? (there was an increase in emmision "nox" requirements implemented january 2004 in calif... . ) Any knowledgeable reply's please, Marty

Do't know if qualify as "knowledgeable" but it is my understanding that the additives in the California fuels are the reason.

Cummins should beable to respond to your question

No unusual "additives" in California diesel fuel I am aware of, at least any that would accellerate darkening of the oil...

Maybe another customer for the Frantz bypass oil filter... ;) :D :p
