Another Newbie New To Diesels

New 06 3500

I swapped a 04, F250 4X4, XLT,V10, crew cab for an 05, 3500, Laramie, 4X4, Quad Cab, 8', black leather, red with silver bottom, 325/610, 4:10, SRW, Mopar Running Boards, RB4 Mopar Navigation System and on and on. This truck had 20K on it when I made the purchase (10/05). I don't know the orginal owner. Carfax said he put 20K on in 8 months. I've since put on 4K. To my question. I have changed the oil and filter 2 times. Both times the oil was black in 500 miles. Is this normal?

By the way, I was a long time Ford guy. This truck turned me into a CTD Dodge lover.

Thanks, Kelly

i don't know what you consider dirty, but compared to a gasser (which i'm assuming is all you've had prior to this truck) a diesel's oil will always be "dirtier," it should not be jet black, but it will be discolored and have a much darker tint than new oil, thats just the nature of these things and nothing to be concerned about

Mines an '05 also and after its first oil change ( 2 weeks ago ) it sat overnight without being run. Upon dipstick inspection the next morning... the new oil was as black as that which was drained. I think oily soot must cling to everything internal and is washed down by new oil and re-suspended in the pan. The motor doesn't seem to mind. . it still takes ten miles driving after start-up to budge the temp guage. . not too much friction evidently.

Black oil normal for 2004.5 and up

MKeliher, The black oil syndrone is normal for the 2004. 5 325/600 and 610 motors. Theory has it that it is the result of the third injection event. Those that have sent in oil analysis report no problems.

Thanks all. I am in the utility business and cheched alot of oil. All on shared vehicles, many mfg's. The kicker is never my own.

Tim, my trucks pointed towards northern Maine!

if your in the north, ie maine, you may consider putting a lighter oil in the truck while its cold, specifically if you do a lot of empty drivin, i know people that will run as light as a 5w during the winter, the oil pressure will build quicker and it should lube better while the engine is cold... just something to consider. side note, i'll be up skiing at sunday river right after christmas

have a good christmas
