My 2005/3500 has 6248 miles on it. I have changed oil in it 3 times, Just changed and the oil is black in 20 miles. I use Delo 400 with Stratapore filters in the truck. The engine was mfg on 9/1/04 and is stock. My old 96 never sooted oil like this. It remained clean at 4000 miles. The stack is also sooted on this o5. The dirty oil drives me nuts, anyone got any suggestions on this. The truck does not smoke, and is used to pull a tt.

thanks taylor

I have noticed the same thing on my 2004. 5. I use the same oil & filter as you. I change the oil at 10,000 miles and have it analyzed. The test results show the oil is still well within acceptable limits. So just enjoy your truck and don't worry about the dirty oil unless it shows up OUTSIDE the engine.

What MM said, mine is black by 500mi. Most of the third gens do this, I think it has to do with the third injection event.

Don't worry about it! And you need not change oil every 2500mi, it is just a waste.

My 04 didnt do it but my 04. 5 does. Dealer says NORMAL. I love the truck, though it just turned One year old and is time for a new one. I rarely keep a truck longer than 1 year. Mine will be in the classifieds after Robin approves the add I placed last night.

As per several other threads, the black oil is quite normal on all 04. 5's and on. .

Enjoy your truck! Oo.

My 05 2500 (engine build date 11/4/04) is the same it gets black real quick. Has done this since it was new 12,600 on the truck now.

Theory 1: The third injection pulse for emissions purposes is somehow sending carbon / soot into the oil supply.

Theory 2: The turbo is somehow letting soot from the exhaust enter the oil. (remote -- I really think it's #1 Above)

These are just (un)educated theories... .

My oil is black immediately after changing it, like before I even get it out of the garage. I let it drain all night before changing it too.

my '03 305/555 motor doesn't change color for the first 6000-7000 miles when not towing. Towing my 11200 lb 5er it starts changing color at the 3500-4500 mile level. I use Stratapore and 15w-40 Rotella. I sure ain't complainin'... ..... JIM

Diesel engine oil is used as detergent to clean the engine of the contaminated created by combustion. Gas engine have less "dirty byproducts" when combusting, so they do not change black like Diesels do. This is why Diesel oil is formulated "for diesel engines"

Why do you buy a new truck every year. A Dodge with a Cummins can last a long time, (Longer than Furd and Chevy) My 95 went 10 years without any problems, just a new set of tires, batteries and front brakes.

I can't imaging buying a new truck every year. Besides the depreciation hit, it takes about a year from the time I start to spec out an order till I have the truck and get all the mods done to set it up the way I want it for towing.

I too have an 05 Dodge CTD HPCR 3500 4X4 Lonestar, and my oil is pitch black within 500 miles. I think this "Spinner-II" is the answer to our prayers. I use PetroCanada Duron 15w40 synthetic oil, everytime I change my oil, it costs me $120 dollars. $108 dollars go to my oil and the $12 bucks for the Fleetguard Statapore oil filter. It only costs me $120 because I change the oil myself.

Here's my reasoning: If I can extend my oil change intervals... . I can save a whole lot of dough. Check out this link on how to extend your oil change intervals 5 fold. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133882

This is my next engine mod... . any comments are appreciated, good or bad... . just thoroughly explain your logic.
