Finally got around to tearing this thing apart . Magnets and filter sure helped keep the metal out of everything a couple papers towels and the case Is clean . Going to go ahead and order a new main shaft fifth gear has to much backlash for my liking .

That is not good. I worry about towing a camper and 950 lb trailer and using 5th gear while traveling. I had rebuilt the NV4500 a couple years ago with a new main shaft and fifth gear. The gear while being fully splined was a bit looser on the mainshaft that I think it should have been. No doubt import parts. I hope I am not creating what you have there. Can you describe the use you put it through? And the symptoms causing removal? I am curious. And good luck on your rebuild. It sure looks like it was time.

I work them like a rented mule I normally gross between 30 and 35000 as high as 370000 . You’ll be fine that’s how the gears fit on the new fully splined main shaft the only fool proof way to hold the fifth gear in place is green loctite and the super but I posted about I also have a fifth gear retainer but you have to be careful because it can hit the transfer case housing . I have been limping this transmission along for about 2 years now it’s been a little noisy finally the bearing let go on the front of the counter shaft and that’s when it doesn’t move anymore except in 4th gear
