I was wondering if it is possible to retro-fit the new rear disk brakes to older Rams; like my '99?

Has anyone done this or been thinking about doing it?

CARRK:

In the Dec 2000, vol 37, No. 12 issue of Four Wheeler magazine lists a company named Stainless Steel Brakes Corporation has a disk brake kit for Rams. They claim it come with everything you need and no welding, cutting or special tools. You can call them at 800-448-7722 or e-mail at www.ssbrakes.com

Hope this helps.

CARRK:

I guess I should have checked the site first. Look like they just make the kits for 1500s. Might be worth a phone call though to see if there's anything in the works for 2500/3500 applications.

Better yet, I wonder if somebody makes FRONT brakes for the ram that work? I run Performance Friction Carbon Mattallic and they still only last 30K. Now at 75K the calapers are starting to get tight (starting to freeze). Another advantage to the PFCM is I have never cut the rotors, and they still look great!

I called SS Brakes to ask about rear discs for the 2500 and 3500 trucks. They don't make them and don't have plans to.

I asked how many people it would take to to get them interested; he said, "at least 50 and the price would be in the 1200. 00 range".

For 1200. 00, I think I can buy a complete rearend from a 2001 and a set of steel rally wheels which I want anyway.

1,200 bucks sounds cheap to get great breaks on the pre 2001. 5 Rams. I would get rid of the single puck fronts on pre 2000 also. With all the modifiction bucks being spent out there I'm surprised no one is trying to upgrade the lousy brakes on, at least, the pre 2000 trucks. I hated my pull to the right brakes on my 99. #ad

I used junkyard parts to convert my Chevy's 14 bolt rear to disk. Works great, cost maybe $150. If you want info, do a search with my name, I posted on it a few months ago, or email me.

[Copied from my post in August] "I don't know if or how well it would work on the Dana 80, but I was able to convert the 14 bolt on my Blazer to disks using front brake parts. I used rotors and caliper brackets from a late 70's 3/4 ton Chevy 4x4, and calipers from the rear of a 77 Eldorado. The Chevy calipers can also be used, but then you don't have an e-brake.
I had to do a little work to the caliper brackets fit, but it was nothing too difficult. I also installed an adjustable proportioning valve in place of the stock one. The brakes now work great, even on steep slopes or ledges with 40" tires. Best of all, the total cost was under $150 (using mainly junkyard parts, I later rebuilt the calipers).

Feel free to email me if you have any questions, I'd also like to know if this works on the 80. "

The caliper brakets I used are drilled for six mounting bolts. I had to open up the I. D. slightly and redrill for the 4 mounting bolts on the rear 14 bolt. The caliper braket also had to be spaced out about an inch from the flange. The Chevy wheels are 8 on 6-1/2, same as the Dodge. I don't know if the flange on the Dodge is the same as the 14 bolt, nor do I know of anyone who has attempted the swap on a Dodge. The setup is a bit crude, but works really well. I imagine that the ABS computer would not appreciate this mod either.
