I just went on a 2500 mile trip and everytime I filled up the DTE would only go to 422 miles. I would drive the truck about 600 miles on a tank of fuel. Why is the DTE so far off.

Do a search on TSB 18-037-04. It addresses serveral problems of which overhead console accuracy is one. White smoke on startup is another as well as quieter operation. Improved fuel economy, also. Lots of info, pros and cons on this TSB. Hope this helps.

Before I got the TSB done, my DTE would be at 330 after fill up. Now it went to like 430 after the first fill after the TSB. I haven't driven it enough to know for sure but it looks like so far, I am getting an additional 2 mpg. Part of that TSB addresses the accuracy of the fuel monitor I think.

One reason seems to be that the tank is designed to be filled until the pump clicks off. By topping off as I do there is an extra 5 or so gallons that the computer is not figuring. After filling up the DTE doesn't change for me for about 100 miles. The DTE does seem to be adjusted by past mileage. Last tank I drove until the DTE read 0 and put in 35. 4 gallons. I have read the actual tanks capacity is 40-41 gallons total. So I guess that there was still 5 or 6 gallons after the overhead reads empty. (at least on my truck)

Spooled-up's vent kit

I bought Spooled-up's $35 vent kit and my DTE on fill-up is more than 700 miles. That's on the money too because I drive it to zero and it holds 35 gallons. No froth, no mess, no hairy-legged truck driver glaring at me while I squeeze that last 3 or 4 gallons into the tank. This has been the best little aftermarket item I've seen.

Jeremiah,

do you have the web-site or phone number for the Spooled-up's $35 vent kit? Did you install it or did you have it installed? Cost$?

Thanks in advance.

Andre.

Spooled-up's kit is in the classifieds. I have installed one and agree with Jeremiah 100% and recommend it. You could buy the parts for a couple of dollars less, but the kit comes all ready to go with instructions. The only "hard" part is dropping the tank.

I had it installed. I don't have the tools, jacks, etc. , and if you don't have 'em and basically know what you're doing, it would be a mistake to take it on by yourself. It's an hour and a half job the first time, probably a half hour the second time. Depends on what your mechanic charges. You'll have all the parts. Suggestion: print all the photos that Spooled-up put on the TDR forum. What do they say - a picture is worth a thousand words.

I just ordered mine last week... I'm hoping it gets here before I need to fill up again. Man it's a pain to to fill this thing up all the way! Out of you guys that installed the kit. . how many of you used the o-ring and how many left it out?

Vents the tank back to the filler neck so that you can fill it all the way up to the top without having to wait 10 minutes for it to burp down a few ounces at a time until it's full. It allows the portion of the tank set aside for expansion to be filled with fuel. Just don't top it off before parking it all day in the sun. Check this thread for details. link here

I have read comments that 38 or 40 gallons can be pumped into the tank after installing Spooled-up's vent hose. I haven't found that to be the case. I have run the DTE down to zero and a complete refill puts in a tad over 35 gallons.

IMHO, the expansion tank does not fill with fuel, which means the main tank fills up, allowing the air inside to escape out Spooled-up's vent hose instead of that stupid vent provided by the factory. Bottom line: there should be no problem with over-fill.

Maybe Spooled-up can provide us with some experiments to put this rumor to rest.
