Distributor vs. mechanical pumps

What is the difference between these two pumps? I own a 92... what kind do I have? From what I've read on this site, I should have the VE44. A buddy of mine has a 2001 and he has a VP 44 that's electronically controlled distributor type. Just want to know what the differences are. Thanks.
 
Other may chime in here with more knowledge but here is how I understand it.



1989 - 1993 use the Bosch VE style pump. Mechanical, rotary style pump.

1994 - early 1998 12v use the P7100 pump. Mechanical style pump

1998 - 2002 24V use the VP44 electronic pumps.



Of course there are those who have converted their 1st Gen trucks to 2nd Gen power or a P7100 conversion. I think the VP44 pumps got alot of negative press from the problems encountered and the many pump failures early on.

Where distributor comes in I don't know. Gassers use them of course for spark, unless you mean something else in diesel lingo.



OMG, a 3rd genner posted in the 1st Gen forums. I'm a 1st genner at heart.
 
Both the VE (like you have) and the VP, like the 2001 are distributor/mechanical pumps. The VE has a mechanical timing where as the VP has electrical servo. Both pumps look amazingly alike. I belive that the VP also has some other electricl device which operates the governor or some part of governoring the speeds.



I think the VP looks nearly identical to the old Bosch VE used on the Chevrolet Chevete four banger engine
 
Along with what has already been pointed out about the differences and the year application... . I do believe that the VP is a radial displacement design compared to the VE which is an axial displacement design.
