About 8 years ago I bought a 1974 International 1/2 ton 4x4 pickup to convert my '74 Mazda Rotary pickup to a 4x4. I took the Mazda Body and set it on the IH frame after shortening it 29 inches. I used a Ford 302, a C4 and a divorced transfer case (I believe it was a New Process of some kind). This worked great. I'm really not much of a 4 wheeler but I live above the snow now so I am contemplating building a 4x4 with a 4BT or a Mercedes 5 cyl turbo diesel. What vehicles commonly came with divorced transfer cases? I do not think I need one that is very heavy duty. In fact I think I would prefer one that would help save overall weight.

Divorced transfer case's can be found in 70' Ford's (NP205), 60's Dodge's (NP201) but these are are cast iron cases and very "heavy" duty. If you can afford it, the Atlas II transfer case is as strong as the NP205 but only weights 110 lbs. It will would bolt on directly behind most transmission.

71-early 77 Ford 3/4 ton trucks came with a divorced NP205 (part time) or NP203 (full time) transfer case. Chevys of around the same vintage came with divorced cases also. I think some 70s Dodges came divorced, but I'm not certain.

REMOTE TRANSFER CASE

You can also find them in IH 3/4- 1 tons. I got one a few years ago to put in my CHEVY when i was going through my "TALL TRUCK" stage. :D

Crash,

Full time vs. Part time? Full time does not mean there is no 2WD mode, does it?

Are you (Steve) saying that the only divorced transfer cases are cast iron? I remember the one I used from that IH was pretty heavy.

Are these divorced cases relatively long lived?

Are they highly sought after or relatively easy to find?

Divorced T-cases

Back when divorced T-cases were the norm only the

Ford had the front drive off of left side. Ford

used divorced T-cases up till early '77 on the

F-250s the half ton went to a married case much

earlier. Chevys used married cases all through

the seventies. Dodge used divorced T-cases up

through '74 if I'm not mistaken. I'm not sure if

International ever used a married T-case on there

full sized pick-ups. There were some military

applications for 200 series New Process T-cases

such as the M-715. Hope some of this helps.

My 75 F250 had the seperate transfer case and I sold the truck with 250,000 on it and it was in great shape as far as I know and I towed a 15000lb 5th wheel with it too.

Jeepthing,

Is that in a CJ? Wouldn't that be a pretty short wheelbase for a divorced transfer case.

BTW, were there any quadratrac divorced transfers? Are quadratracs any good?
