Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) lubricity

Plan on going through my transmission very soon. It does have some issues (code 37, slow shift into OD and TC lock up, limp mode) that will be diagnosed and any electronic problems dealt with first. For preventive maintenance I will replace the governor soleniod and the transducer. It also has 198k miles and will be used for towing, so some upgrades are in order.

I have a friend who was a transmission tech for DC. He knows these trannys inside and out, and still has all the tools to properly work on them.

My question is what kits / parts to purchase for doing some upgrades.

**Found a rebuild kit that had red clutchs and kolene steels - is this the one to get?

**Found a single disc TC (the 3 disc is out of my $ range) with a billet face and larger single disk - are these good?

**Shift kits - found a few my Transgo. Did some reading on them and it seems like the biggest issue was hard shifts - and since this will be tow rig, that is not an issue. Is one better than an other?

**Saw a post talking about drilling out a port - what / where / why?

Thanks for any advise you can provide.
