Dual mass flywheel gone.

While unloading in Laredo yesterday the truck started shaking a little more than usual. Held the drivers door open between the 1/2 and full open posistion and could see it shaking. Took her into the transmission guy this morning and replaced the stock unit wiht another stock unit. I didnt have time to order one because of my job. the stock unit was only $266+tax. Install was $400. The clutch looked brand new.

Mine is the 5th one to go out before 100,000 miles of just people I know. So, if you havent replaced it yet, get ready.

You know, with so many of these units going bad, and dealers even telling me there going bad, you'd think we could file suit against Dodge.

Ford had a whole slew of them go bad a while back too. If it lasts beyond the warranty period, they are off the hook.

Please don't even mention a class action suit. That does nothing but feed the lawyers pocketbook and drive prices up for us consumers when the company has to pay said lawyers. You would gain next to nothing. Is a $600 repair on a nearly 100k mile truck THAT egregious?

Just knowing it is a mechanical failure do to poor design just jerks my chain. It's one thing if 3 out of 10 have a problem but when 7 out of 10 have a problem - thats BS.

Dmf

You're running an Edge Juice and apparently hauling. $700. 00 for 100,000 miles of much higher horsepower usage doesn't seem too bad. However, the fact that only the dmf grenaded while clutch was intact is disturbing.

I agree to the extent that pretty much every manufacturer that has used them has had problems. Even Porsche used them in the '90s and had problems. I wish they would just quit using them if they are so prone to failure.

The problem is the people who demand such refinement from these vehicles. heaven forbid your big truck rattles a little or the trans doesn't sound silky smooth. I wish those wanting such high levels of refinement would look elsewhwere. GM makes perfectly good sissy trucks. If you want a truck that drives like a car, buy it from them and leave the real trucks to those who need and want them.

Why would it seem odd that the DMF went bad and the clutch didn't ? The DMF issue is internal to the flywheel, there is no actual "explosion" , just increased vibration.

Mine is at 75k now and I am not looking forward to having to replace it either, but I will go to a solid one at that point to eliminate the problem forever.

I run my edge 90% of the time on "0". Increased hp had no part in the demise of the dmf.

the mechanic could make the center bearing wobble only slightly and that was by prying on the springs with a screwdriver. It was enough to get the vibration.

No pics. i told the mecanic if the clutch needed replaceing to do it. I agrred with the mechanic that the clutch looked liked you just pulled it out of the box.

I gues what makes me so mad is I put 243,000 on my 04. 5 in less than 2 1/2 years with no problems. This truck wont be a year old till September.

other than that, I really like this truck. :)

DMF Failure

The G56 DMF can experience a vibration problem due to a failure of the piloting bushing between the primary and secondary. I posted pictures of it previously.

Our 2007 has a SFW Variable Torque system in it and we should be announcing the part numbers very soon.

This is not a chatter problem for diagnosis, it is a true engine RPM driven vibration.
