When I went down to DMV to turn in the plate and get my "refund" for the unused portion of the registration, I instead got a credit towards the registration of another vehicle. OK, I can live with that. However, on the credit paper it says that the credit decreases in value each day that I don't use it! In other words, DMV is still getting money from me for a trailer that I no longer own, and from the guy who bought it. On their website, it basically says "It's not our fault, it's state law. " Anyone else have an experience like this? How is it done in your state? Ruined my whole freakin' day!

Yep - that's the way it is done. I was in the same situation - sold a 05 vette and had about $700 in credit. Went down and re-registered all my other vehicles for another year to use it up - changes the registration due date but stops the depreciation on the credit. The only cost to you is the smog test (assuming Reno has one) if you are outside the validity period from your last smog test.AMink said:However, on the credit paper it says that the credit decreases in value each day that I don't use it! They pro-rate where you are at today just like they calculated the credit, then re-register for another year. IIRC, they even pro-rate the small registration fee. Pretty fair really, other than the fact that they force you to do something and not just sit on the credit.AMink said:When the registration dates change, how do they handle the remaining time on the registration you already paid for? I mean if your registration was up next January and you used your credit in June, what happens to the other 6 months you already paid for?
