Bed Plate Campaign (M-11)

Another Ford Claim - 560 ft lbs

Got my registration in the mail today...

registration alone=$30

Vehicle License Fee=$182

WEIGHT FEE=$154 <------

is there a way to cut this number down? i heard if you get the truck weighed at a certified scale and get the documents to prove it is LESS than what is actually is on "file" . . it will not be so high... for instance, my 1993 first gen extended cab weighed almost the same but i payed LESS:confused: ... can someone guide me in the right direction?

It seems to go by unladen weight. You need to start removing things until your unladen weight is 5000 pounds or less.

Sounds to me like the first thing I would remove would be my butt from Calif. to someplace that doesn't have it's head up it's ... ... well, other end.

Makes me glad to be a "Right Coaster";)

Geeeez, how do youse guys deal with all that bureaucratic B. S. ?

I thought D. C. was bad with all the politicos, you guys make us look good. :-laf

utah is starting to get the same way, Some government clowns think they need to get rich off vehicle registration. So the best way to defeat this however illegal as it may be is just get your truck registered in another state. my dad who lives here still keeps some of his vehicles registered in Texas and they mail the registration right to his address here and everything. There is a # of advantages to a Texas registration, no emissions check, no saftey inspection, and they can't really get your for too dark of tint on your windows LOL:D just send um a check for 65 bucks get your sticker and you are set for another year plus the money goes to the coolest state in the union:cool:

FYI: If you have handicapped plates on your truck the weight fees are waived. As of January this year the weight limit for that went up from 6000 to 8000 pounds.

As someone who used to have to deal with Calif bs let me tell you of a solution. Completly legal is to have a camper shell on your truck and register as a housecar and then there are no commercial fees of any kind on it. Almost legal if you dont want a shell on it is to borrow one and do the housecar thing but get a personalized license so when you take the shell off there is no way that the plate gives away the non commercial nature of the licensing and dont get stopped by police who will figure it out (maybe). The fees in Calif should be illegal. My truck was 30 years old and was $275. 00 a year and my 5th wheel car hauler with living quarters was $450. 00.

Good Luck

John

As far as licensing your truck in another state try this on for size. When I moved back to Arizona in the late 80's I had Kansas license plates on all of my vehicles. About 2 weeks after moving in I went out to go to work and there was a piece of paper under the windshield wiper of my 66 Cadillac. It was a note from a cop who lived down the street and it said " you have been here long enought, go get Arizona tags". So I did. JTMcC.

Hey Greg,

Don't feel too bad. Can you guess what I just paid 3 weeks ago for my truck registration... . ????

And this is *after* the 25% "refund" on whatever part of the fees it is... ...

$420 :--)

When I bought it brand new in Sept. 2000, just before they passed the 25% reduction in vehicle fees, the registration was over $700.

Heck, in 2000 when I paid the registration on my 1987 Ford F250 6. 9L diesel, it was something like $185... .

As someone who has been down this road let me offer a little advice.

First, weight fees are paid by all 'commercial' vehicles. A commercial vehicle is defined as a vehicle designed to primarily haul goods not people. This means an El Camino/Ranchero is considered a commericial vehicle and a Suburban/Excursion is not even though the Sub/Ex weighs a ton more. It would be interesting to see if a quad cab or crew cab P/U could get out of commercial weight fees since it has 6 seat belts - sounds like a people mover to me.

Second, a shell does not make your truck a house car (RV) and get you out of commericial weight fees. The living quarters have to be permanately attached - like a Class C motorhome. Two of my friends owned a '69 Dodge P/U with a shell and house car plates. Each of them was pulled over by the CHP for improper registration when they took the shell of to move their household goods. The fact the DMV issued house car plates to the previous owner did not matter. The DMV is not held responsible for their mistakes.

I have registered two trucks in CA and both times gotten weight certs that showed the truck weighed less than the weight listed on the title. Saves a few bucks a year.

There are several hundred reasons a year why my current truck is registered in WA to my father & I..... 3 of my neighbors are local PD and one is CHP - none of them have cited me for my WA plates. I've lived here two years:) When I lived in LA I was cited twice for improperly registered vehicles by CHP - out of state plates - and beat the ticket both times. You just have to know how to play the game.

NVR FNSH, I do know several folks who have their trucks registered in New Mexico as it is a lot cheaper. Most if not all have to lie to several people a year to get by with it. I'd just rather register where my actual residence is and be done with it. I work in several states each year and can assure you that business trucks with out of state plates recieve extra attention from the law, Wyoming being one of the most stringent. A lot of states will pull over commercial 1-tons, again with out of state plates, and direct you to the scale, just about every welding rig on the road is overweight. Anyway my insurance company has a real interest in where my vehicles are driven and where they actually are parked at night too. Have a good week, JTMcC.

As long as the shell remains in place it can be a housecar as the cargo utility is negated. Its when its removed you are in violation as then cargo can be carried easily. Thats the criteria that was given to me by DMV California.

See other people share my thoughts as well, Tell them to shove the fees where the sun don't shine and register your vehicle in another state. Then maybe then they will come up with realistic registration fees.

One of my sisters lives about 40 miles north of the Oregon border in Washington. Washingtons registration fees are considerably higher than Oregon, so she bought her new car in Oregon and registered it here. An alert State Trouper in Washington noticed he was seeing that car regularly, pulled her over checked it out; sister is now unhappy - she has spent more on fines than she saved on lower registration fees, and had to pay the back registration fees.

Worse; a certain RV dealer in mid state Oregon was assisting new purchasers to register their new motorhomes in Oregon. Sales manager and a couple sales guys got a free ride downtown-------in handcuffs!!!! And many of their out of state buyers got valentines in the mail from their now informed states. You see, the states with the high registation fees arn't entirely in the dark and they don't mind collecting the back registration fees plus some fine money. Several now have active programs to pursue such collections.

Sometimes its wiser (cheaper) to follow the laws of the state you happen to live in.

I am looking at the renewal for my 86 F250 6. 9 and it is $224, same as it was last year, looks like this is about as low as it's going to get for me and this is a truck that is 17 years old !!!!!!(mfr date 09/85)
