I mentioned the KDP problem to a friend who's daughter owns a 1992. The question was raised about the KDP being a problem for that year. Anyone know if it is? Thanks

To the best of my knowledge the first generations didn't have a problem, different cover.

I've also read in here the 97's seem to have the most frequent problems with the KDP.

;) I just opened up my timing cover on my 92 and the pin had only moved about 1\8". It went back in kinda hard, so I don't know if it would have come all the way out. However the bolt that I took out to do the fix was loose, not that it would have come out. It was good piece of mind and new gasket (take ser. no. to get the right one) and seal, not a hard job. But, yes, there is a straight hole for the dowel pin to go right onto the timing gears. When in there be sure to Blue locktite all the bolts that mount the housing. Also, when you set the clearence on the pickup on the crankshaft, set it with a brass . 050 feeler guage. If you have any questions, fell free to e-mail me. Tim;) ;) ;)

The problem exists in EVERY 12 valve engine produced from 1989 till 1998. Cummins says they made a change in 1998, but doesn't specify if that change went into effect with the ISB introduction or with the last of the 1998 12 valve engines. From the stance Cummins originally took on the original dowel pin problem and its questionable existence, I'd get even a 1998 12 valve engine done the CPFF way just to be safe. I personally have done that service to about a dozen first gen trucks and have had to remove the cover off of one 1990 engine because the dowel had creeped out so far, I couldn't bottom the drill bit in the case. That one felt really good because I knew that I had spared that owner about ten thousand bucks. Get them all done... . it's a rarity, but it does happen.
