I recently bought a 93 W250 4x4 in great shape with 108,000 miles. It has a rotary style pump and I'm wondering if these engines had the dowel pin problem like the ones equipped with a p-pump. Thanks for the help. Anthony

No, I don't think so.

I take that back, It is said to be rare that the kdp is a problem in first gens. however there are some bolts that are prone to be problem in that year. So IMHO, I would take a couple of hours and do the fix, new seals, and a good cleaning never hurt anything. If you like the peace of mind then do the fix.

About 2 years ago I did the KDP on my 97 and also did it on a friends 93. The case is different on the 93. The tab is bolted uder a case bolt an inch or more away from the dowel pin hole on both. The 97 uses a flat tab but the 93 needs a bent one since the pin hole is a raised up boss. I used the TST flat tab and ground it ti fit in the 1/8 crack in the boss hole. Otherwise you need to bend a tab to fit between the nearest bolt and the pin hole.

I believe it needs to be done and my researched then proved right. The 93 dowel pin was out about 1/8-1/4 inch. Besides fixing the dowel pin, its worth taking the gear case cover off to tighten and loctite all the inner case bolts since they can cause the same damage (well documented on this site).

I'd do it. Here is the link to my 93 fix:

Most of the great pics I took are not shown in the thread anymore (I don't know why!) but there is a pic of the TST modified tab. I my have the pics around if your interested.

If it was my truck I'd get in there just to tighten the inner case bolts. Replace the water pump, coolent, timing belt, rad hoses and check the fan clutch too while you have it apart. Might have the cooling system pressure flushed too. Care must be taken to get the crank front cover seal on without it leaking so pay attention to how thats done.

Good luck,

Dave
