Good for Cummins. I am very please do see their engines potentially making a major push in to the light duty truck segment. I am anxious to see what is going to develop in the next year or two. My 1/2 ton will be due for replacement in another year and I am excited with all the new options.

I really don't understand how a company like Toyota wouldn't bring their own engines to market. Nissan is much smaller than Toyota so I could understand their viewpoint but Toyota has million of small diesels around the world (clean tech in Europe) and should be able to very easily attain EPA approval for entry into the US market.

I really think all these marketing dorks that perform the surveys to feel out diesel acceptance must ask Prius owners only. They need to search out the people in the market in which they are attempting to dabble.

Well, Ram went the in-house version instead of the Cummins and there seem to be some very mixed emotions at best. I would bet that this forum would be buzzing right now if you could order a 14 Ram 1500 with that same 5.0 Cummins, as it is now the conversation is almost non existent.
I think it is very much a marketing thing for Toyota, and a smart one at that.

OK Fitzwater, call me anything BUT a Prius owner :-laf

How about that. Years ago you could get almost any engine in almost any brand class 8 truck. Nowadays it's like buying a passenger car- certain engine in certain trucks. Looks like the door is open at Cummins. Perhaps if it has EPA's blessing, it can go into any vehicle? I can't remember at any time a certain engine being available across different manufacturers, let alone competitors!

I still think Ram decided that the Cummins 5.0 liter was just to close to the 6.7 to put it into the Ram line-up, thinking it would dilute the 6.7 liter sales. I basically agree in part thinking Ram, (Fiat), thought the VM Motori unit would capture the folks looking for the MPG's and still be robust to be a decent lighter weight tow rig. I to mourn the lost of the Cummins 5.0 liter to another brand but we'll get over it.

I think it's got a good home in the Nissan or Toyota, I just can't get excited about a V configured automotive diesel, even if it is a Cummins.

I've been bitten by just about every diesel manufacturer out there EXCEPT Cummins. I have to say, I'm excited about Nissan potentially putting it in the Frontier. Way better suited for what I want to do compared to the Ram 1500 with the guido diesel.

Toyota needs to follow suit with the Tacoma/2.8 Cummins.
Could be the potential to see the first $50k compact truck:-laf

The Toyota will be a hot seller as a lot of folks drink the To-Yo kool aid. I'm sure they are a good truck as a co-worker is always bragging about his Tundra etc..... but I'll be darned if I will ever drive something so UGLY as a Tundra. Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder.
It will be an interesting race between the 1/2 ton diesel trucks. Fiat is going for the fuel mileage and marginal towing ability and Toyota/Nissan will be going for more capability and relying on the Cummins name to market the truck.

JMHO, but I think you'll find that the 5.0 Cummins will start to push the Nissan and Toyota toward one-ton versions- I don't think a 1/2 ton driveline will handle that engine. They will end up as "light duty" one ton trucks. Ram correctly recognized that the goal for this segment is FE, not more power. It would have been nice, though, if they could have used the V6 Cummins that was under development at the time.

I think that the outcome of the above may also play a big role in Fiat's long term relationship with Cummins in the larger trucks. It may prove that a Cummins under a Ram hood is too powerful of a selling tool and thus could not be replaced with a in-house Fiat diesel engine without a drastic drop in sales and profits.

It'll sell like hotcakes.
Toyota will research it and beef the suspension appropriately.
Nissan...I doubt it.

Wake up and smell the coffee...
Don't expect these new diesel to sell look at what these auto companys are up agaist. They have to charge a extra 5000 for the motor, so the consumer can pay a extra 75 cent a gallon for fuel, in a truck that does not get very much better mileage, and break down often and is expense to repair......

Anyway you look at it, goverment regulation are destroying us oil burners

What I find comical is the new 1/2 ton diesel is being touted as an "adequate" light duty towing truck that only has the power to pull light trailers.

Remember 1994? The "new" Ram with the "new improved" Cummins? It had considerably less HP and the same torque as the 1/2 ton, with about an 800 usable RPM window and a 5 speed transmission. Yet somehow I managed to pull my 12,000lb 5th wheel up and down the mountains with a smile on my face.

The new truck will easily have 1500-2000 usable RPM's AND an 8 speed transmission. I, for one, am very excited about it and will definitely be buying one. My Dually is just overkill for pulling the boat / jet skis / atvs / snowmobiles, etc. My current Hemi has more than enough power, but the fuel mileage goes in the crapper even with two four wheelers on an aluminum flatbed.

Hell, I'll probably only use the Dually for the gooseneck and the 5th wheel. Or my 30' enclosed that I use all of about twice a year. It should last a long time, which is great. I'd rather drive the 1/2 ton anyway, with full air ride suspension, there is no comparison in comfort.

Cheers!

I had a '92 auto which I traded on an '01 5-speed. I have yet to own a trailer that those two truck couldn't pull. They may have done it slower than what is out there now, but they got the job done.
