I bought it last August from piers and I was wondering if it is a new version without brushes. They seem to be more reliable. I havn't had amy issues with mine but I was just wondering.

Thanks, John

Nope you got the older one it has brushes see the black plastic caps on end of motor where power wires enter those two are the brush holders. the new ones do not have those.

Guys I have good news, the new motor still has brushes they are not serviceable from the outside. I called fass and they explained to me that the new style is more weather proof, they were having some problems with moisture entering the brush caps, thus causing problems. I would just put some silicone on the brush caps. Good luck, Gregg :)

To the best of my knowledge a DC motor can not be made brushless like an AC motor can. A brushless motor uses phase shifting to cause the rotation and with DC power you do not have phase shifting.

Hey Kevin, FYI DC stepper motors are brushless. Last month I found out about new 3 phase DC brushless motors that use PWM motor controllers. They use them on our Hydrogen Fuel Cells we have at work.

Can anybody give me an idea how long the brushes in a Fass last?

I have about 50,000 miles on mine and I am wondering if I should pick up a spare set.

Thanks!

Never hurts to have a spare set ready. It only takes a minute to pull them babies out to inspect them but look out not to loose the springs.

Interesting, this is the first I've head of brushless DC motors. Learn something new every day. :)

Brushless DC motors require a pulsed DC voltage which requires some kind of external or internal voltage conditioning circuitry. :D
