Started the racing season last week, and noticed that as I towed my 24' Haulmark Trailer loaded (7500#) up hills with overdrive OFF, foot to the floor, the water temp would raise above the 190 mark--looked like around 210-215, then it would come right back down. Outside temp was 77. Last fall when I bought the truck I didn't notice it doing it.
Thanks Guys

Truck is 100% stock. And my partners C3500 454 Crew Cab can burn me going up the hills.

There's your problem #ad

I've noticed mine doing it too. I don't see it being a problem.

foot to the floor,

here's your problem , you're driving it like a gasser . i'm afraid to think what your trans temp reached to raise your water temp that much . when you floor it the TC unlocks and can't lock back up , the inefficent design of the stock TC is screaming thru the fluid and creating to much heat that is raising your engine temp thru the cooler mounted on the side of the block under the exhaust manifold .

2 things to do , one is not floor it , you need to chase your speed , gradually increasing to keep the TC locked .

2nd is get rid of that piece of junk TC and get a good replacement unit with a high efficency , not a bandaid milled stator , along with a modified VB , then you'll be keeping up with your partners chevy ...

MM,

Does the TC unlock on the 2000+'s? I know mine (1999) won't unlock if I'm above 2000 or so rpm's. Just wondering if they changed that, or is one of us not understanding what's happening.

mine unlocks , they all should , if you floor it it should unlock , if yours ain't , be happy , you got a good one . i'm actually going to be adding a DTT TC saver which will MAKE sure it unlocks , with 400HP plus to the ground ,last thing i need is to fry my TC , plus lockup ain't such a big deal with the 93% TC #ad

If I don't get it out of overdrive, then it really slows down. The RPM's will drop to a round 1900 and it is still in luck-up and my speed falls off, so I just manually take it out of overdrive to get it to speed back up. I guess this is no the thing to do??

Thanks for the input. I would love to have the DTT TC & VB, but I am BROKE!

Semi- Start with the EZ or the BD plug in power. This will make a tremendous difference in towing. Before I got my BD I was ready to trade back in for a PSD.

With just the BD or EZ you will not have to replace the TC right away. It will help towing and fuel mileage.

Get a new TC before going any farther in your bombing. Add some 275 injectors and you will hace a nice towing machine with very tolerable EGT's.

126,000 miles and counting.

Just put in a new thermostat today. Last year the temp never went over 190 while towing in the frontier with ambients of 110*+. Last week the while returning from Vegas my temp went to 210 twice while climbing grades and once when going down hill. It remained at 190 the rest of the trip. I am not going to chance getting stuck in B/F NOWHERE with a failed thermostat. $15 is cheap insurance. Also changed out antifreeze. 30k miles

Paycheck--the trip cost him $75. 00, and it cost me $22. 00 #ad

I know I need the "EZ" and origianlly my concern was not with the power factor, it was with the temps raising.
Thanks Mopar Muscle--I bet that is what is happening--the trans fluid is heating up the coolant--it drops right back down. JNutter, I will go a head a replace thermostat with the new Cummins unit.
Thanks all for the advise.
Ron
