I buy mine at a marine hardware store. Truck stops should have it too. If you drive a lot so the fuel doesn't stay in your tank very long then you don't need to add the biocide that often. A little bit once in a while will keep the fuel free of algae. I have a 50 gallon tank in the bed of my truck. I give it a small dose everytime I fill it.

You shouldn't need it unless you got a load of bad fuel somewhere. You will notice low power. when you pull out your fuel filter it will be coated with a black slime that is what I call the barnicles.

The stuff is NOT dependant on getting a load of bad fuel. I had a commercial fish boat once that got infected. The PO had it docked for over a year without running it. There were no instances of bad fuel for any boats in Humboldt Bay during that time period. The PO had bought all his fuel at the same place for the year before he quit fishing. When we bought it there was an algae problem. It took a big dose of biocide to kill the algae in 1000 gallons of infected fuel. Then cases of fuel filters to get rid of the dead algae. It was a problem for months until it was all filtered out. I have taken no chances on that since then.

Power service sells a fuel polishing kit that contains an algicede. If I remember right its a 3 part mix of their Diesel Kleen, Diesel 911 and the algicide itself, Bio-Kleen. I think you can order it off their website: www.powerservice.com.

Generally even boats don't have an algae problem unless they sit a lot, and keep the same fuel in the tank for long periods. Some large slow-speed cruisers refuel as little as once a year - they and those that just sit at the dock are the ones that need to worry about this.

My boat sits all winter on its trailer, but never has a problem. When I'm out cruising I refuel at least every week or so. If you use your truck often I can't imagine that you need algicide.

The algae is commonly found in tanks that have or had moisture in them along the way. It needs water to survive and grow. At the mine I work at it shows up a couple times a year. we go through about 35K gallons of fuel a day. so I know what its like to change filters for about a month.
