i was thinkin, i wanna turn my pump up, get pod's and put a pdr hx35 on my 89, it a 3 speed auto. with those mods, would i really need an intercooler. all info about egt's and such would be useful. i am also a first time chatter long time reader. you guys seem pretty smart...

With those mods you will generate a fair amount of heat in the combustion chambers and exhaust system. You will definitely need gauges to monitor your exhaust temps. One way to control heat is with a charge air cooler - cooler air is denser and will also improve performance. Just my . 02 cents worth.

well i do have gauges, transmission temp. egt , and boost. sorry for not sayin that before. and i was wonderin . does anyone else other than banks make a complete exhaust . .

I have a exh system from Flowmaster 3 1/2 I havent installed it yet I plan on putting it on my 89 in the near future right now it has nothing just the down pipe off the turbo I want to do the same mods to mine. I have learned a lot from this site

I'm running a 91 w/o the intercooler. I have about the same setup as your wanting, my pdr hx35 was suppose to be here today. You can get into trouble with exhaust temp especially when towing. Mine will reach 1400 easily running empty and over that pulling a trailer. I've been looking into adding a cooler, but hoping the new turbo will help get things under control. alonzo

CKnoop,

I hope your Flowmaster muffler is a straight through design.

A few years back,I wasted about $130 on a Flowmaster.

I phoned the company and was assured that their muffler would

lower backpressure. It didn't. It was no better than the stock

muffler, maybe not as good. Since then I have installed a

4" Donaldson muffler. A whole lot better muffler in my opinion.

I dont have any $$ in the system was door prize at a car show I was at I chose to get the one for the CTD I am thinking of just using the pipe and no muffler I have some straight pieces of 3 1/2 left over from 84 crewcab exh. 440 w 671 Blower onit

farmerzo,

I'm betting you'll see an EGT decrease of between 125-150*F assuming you leave everything the same, and just install the turbo.

The HX35 should give you a couple more psi overall but it will respond WAY faster, and give you cooler boost temps. It will also slow down noticably the speed that your temps climb.

So far, that has been my experience for the short time I've been running the '35 from PDR.

Also if you don't have an aftermarket airbox, then drill three of 4 holes in the stock one. Go with about 2" diameter holes, and just above were the stock inlet to the airbox enters.

When that PDR 35 gets in place you'll love the sound of it winding up,,,, big rig sound to be sure... .
