I have a friend who took his Cat off his wrecked truck for salvage and wants to know if our Cats are worth anything? We know some Cats have platinum in them but not sure about these, anyone have any clues ??
Yes there are precious metals in the CAT... and in the new DPF as well.....
If you've ever seen a catalytic heater... the precious metals react the same way and actually burn the exhaust gases for a more complete burn than the combustion process... .
Well it looks like our cats are made with a ceramic honeycomb core.
I believe that the 2004. 5-2006/7 5. 9L cats are selective catalytic reduction style. Not sure what the actual catalyst material added to the core is, but probably Platinum. But then I am just kind of guessing on what little I have read.
This is a look inside, not much to see but the ceramic based core.
Well that picture is looking directly through it into bright sunlight. Based on that I would suspect some restriction also. But mine fell off when the II SPS66 went on so I don't really have true comparison of before and after. But I don't think it is really as restrictive as it looks based on the boost and spool up I had with the stock turbo. It does change the exhaust sound and smell that is for sure.
I sell old cats to a guy and he pays $100 a piece for most of them but he said the dodge diesel cats are only worth $50. I will keep mine is storage for that much money, just in case I ever have to put it back on!
I've often wondered how our cats can live very long when subjected to the zinc in the oil... that was one reason gasoline-rated oils had their ZDDP lowered... it affected the cat.
Um, the change to CJ-4 happened in the 2006/2007 timeframe... cats have been used on our diesels from 94 through 98. 5 and 2004. 5 to present... the CJ-4 was introduced to work in conjunction with the particulate filter...
And our oils (even the CJ-4 levels) use a lot more ZDDP than a gasoline rated oil...
