I mean I know they'll boil water but what about putting a flat grill - like the ones they offer for $70... ... do they have huge hotspots so you only burn stuff????

We have used one of the cast iron camp grilles (flat on one side and a corrugated texture) through the years on several differnt types of gas stoves. We have upped the BTU output on stoves several times, and so far the "well seasoned" cast iron grill has given a fairly even distrubution of heat. My wife has started using it on one side (2 burners) of an indoor Jenn-Air grille with the stove and it satisfies the even heating requirement again. Don't know about the thinner plate steel ones, thinking the cast iron does well as it does for cast iron skillets, dutch ovens, etc.

Can't beat well seasoned cast iron in my opinion!

I think this is what you are asking -- Most of our back country crews, my self included, use a coleman or an optimus two burner camp stove that uses the green propane bottles (or a tank with adaptor) for cooking. The flame is quite adjustable and do a good job cooking meals in frying pans as well as boinling water. Typically, two people can get by with one bottle for five days. Of course this is carried by mules. If I'm backpacking I either carry the same size and style single burner that fits on top the green bottles if there are two of us (still very adjustable), or if I'll alone I use one of the light weight burners that sit on top of the little iso butane/propane cans (much less adjustable but mostly for boiling water)

I have way too many many stoves and tents
