I'm concerned about egt's. Traveling to Seattle from Portland tonight I watched the pyro more than the road, truck was empty and I was particularly concerned about the temps while on level ground, please review the numbers below and let me know if there could be something wrong or if it is normal. See sig for truck info.

cruise control set at 67

rpm at 1900

outside air temp 61

boost at 5 to 6 psi on level ground

fuel pressure 17 psi steady

egt temps were between 700 and 800 pre-turbo and would ease up to 1000 to 1100 pretty easily on gentle grades. I've heard a lot of reports of people only running in the 500 to 600 range under similar conditions.

if you need more info, don't be afraid to ask.

GCULP,

I drive the I-5 corridor from S. Oregon to vancouver all the time and with my set up I see 600-650 on cruise at 70mphish and the truck is empty. some of the big grades that are on the way I can hit 1100-1200 at the max if I'm trying to kill the hill@85mph with alot of fuel. my stock turbo did alot like what yours is doing and I had about the same size injectors then also. now bigger turbo and big injectors and no problems. I did all my stuff through Source Automotive -- Main there in Milwaukie, Or. hope this helps. 2002 HO 6-SPD LB 4X4 QC HTT 62/14 SB-FE SMARTY TST PM3 MACH 4'S, RINGED AND STUDS, AFE/2:eek: "SILVERLINE D/PRICOL PYRO,BOOST,FUEL FASS 150, VULCAN 1/2 DRAW-STRAW, VULCAN 3/8 FUEL LINE AND FITTINGS, DSS 03 TRAC-BAR DSS BOX TURN-OVER BALL, RIDE RITE AIR BAGS. Were you going uphill in 6th gear with cruise control? If you were around 1900 rpm under load, I would expect temps near 1000*. Shift to 5th at that speed, rpm will go up and egt will go down. Nothing to worry about with your setup. Some timing advance might buy you another 50* off your egt.

Why shift down to fifth? I would speed up to get your RPMs to 2000-2100, thats where I run coolest in 6th. But you egts sound about right, I wouldn't worry about a thing...

thanks for the replies fellas, the hills don't surprise me since it is slightly lugging at 1900 rpm, 3:54 gears and 285 tires.

MCharlebois, yup, it is the stock turbo, and from what I have researched should be adequate for my setup once I have some kind of boost fooler, Smarty, and a boost elbow to push the pressure up to around 32 to 35 psi, true?

DCreed, Smarty is next on the wish list.

Boondocker, as for why 6th gear, I am doing a fuel mileage experiment. On the way home I'm gonna run it up around the 2000 rpm range (70 mph) and see what the temps and mileage do for me.

JFlagg I agree, spinning it up for the hills would hinder the mileage.

johncameron, as for mileage, I am hoping to get it up to 20 mpg for this empty run, I usually see 16 mpg around town, hand calculated.

thans again fellas, I would like to see it in the 600 to 700 degrees, so maybe I'll have to wait till the Smarty.

I was able to squeeze out just over 20 mpg over 358 miles on this trip. Truck was completely empty with canopy. Northbound I held it at 1900 rpm and southbound I let it run up at 2000 rpm. Temps didn't improve by running faster as possibly thought, so for now I'll have to live with them.

I wouldn't shake a stick at that, I have to drive like a grandpa to get mileage that good. It is possible but my right foot doesn't agree all the time:D

yeah, I am happy with the mileage, I would like to work on the temps though, I'll get with Rip and guys at Source to figure it out.

hey fellas, new issue here, driving home from Seattle tonight empty, cruise control set at 69 mph, every little hill the temps climbed to 1100 degrees pre-turbo, this sounds a little high. I was watching the boost guage and it was running around 10 psi on the hills. What I'm wondering is, since my boost pressure is being read at the turbo, does it seem logical that I could have a boost leak between the turbo and the intake manifold, under hard acceleration I am still able to push it up to 30 psi, but again, that is at the turbo. I think I'm gonna pull all the pre and post intercooler boots and check for tears, cracks and holes. Let me know if you have any other ideas.

Downshifting on the grade is the key. It will increase engine speed and trubo speed. This will provide more air to the engine and lower egts. Once you've run the hill, go back to 6 and it will be ok. You said yourself that you were lugging the engine-"thanks for the replies fellas, the hills don't surprise me since it is slightly lugging at 1900 rpm, 3:54 gears and 285 tires". This only heats up the egts. Other than that, there shouldn't be anything to worry about. Your numbers sound a lot like mine.

Maybe time for bigger turbo? I had egt problems when I installed a set of injectors that were too big for my setup. I do have a bigger than stock turbo, but not as big as most, so I couldn't go as big on the sticks as I though. I had 110hp in there and had to drop down to 75 to get things under control. Likewise, maybe your sticks are just at the limit of your turbo and you need more airflow. The reason I ended up with a bad setup is that I had asked around with many different vendors and they said my proposed setup should work-it didn't. That's when I fixed it with the 75's. In talking with the injector builder, I found that they probably underrate the hp a bit. The 110 I thought I was getting, was probably a bit more than that in reality, so it was overkill for my turbo. Likewise, the 75's I have now are probably a bit more, but work out perfectly.

Check for a boost leak. Check the clamps on the boots. I have your setup and have to hit a pretty good grade to hit 1000-1100* empty... ...

I pulled all the intercooler boots, clamps, and tubes off Saturday, no holes or tears. The next thing I think I'll try is a different guage, mine has stuck at 1200 a couple times. The interesting part of this is it seems to be a problem while on Cruise Control, if I drive it manually I can control it with my foot, course, with my foot I can ease out of it whenever I want.

One thought I had was, while cruising at freeway speeds you don't really have any boost built, 5 p. s. i. , so when you come to a easy long grade the cruise control just eases into the throttle delivering more fuel and the turbo doesn't really get to push a lot of air to mix with it. Does that sound like what may be happening?
