just wondering if we have problems with our lift pumps like 2nd gens do? is it worth it to put in a pressure gauge? im cheap and dont want to ruin an injection pump. also how much pressure do we have from the lift pump, would i benifit from a performance style electric fuel pump by the tank? is there such a thing as too much supply pressure? thanks for the help.

Those lift pumps usually last a long time. They're a different design than the '94-98. 4 trucks have, but still reliable.

I had an '01 owner call me out of the blue the other day--not sure how he got my number or why he thought I might know diddly about an '01. He wanted to know where to get a fuel pressure gauge, which one to get and what his opitons were. I told him to do one or more of the following:

1 get a gauge and use it

2 carry a spare pump and know how to install it

3 relocate the pump

4 get a FASS

5 do the in-tank transfer pump

Do ya think I told him right?

As for the 1st gens, the lift pump is only a problem if you want more fuel. Does anyone know if the VE will self-destruct like the VP44 if it's underfueled?

Yep, that is what will happen. The VE, VP, and also the CP3 work the same way when it comes to cooling and lubrication. When you have 0 psi at the IP you are running on borrowed time. The requirements just get higher with the new pumps becuse they make somuch more power.

Fuel Pressure: 18-24psi at idle, 28-36 at 2000 rpm with no load.

All fuel injection pumps are cooled and lubed my fuel. At least as far as the pumping mechanism is. The P-pump does as well, but lube oil does take care of the governor and cam in the bottom.
