Well, my new truck will be ready March 8, and not mid-April! (I wish it was mid-April so I could get a few more paychecks under my belt).

Most of my work will be within the state of NH, but there will be times I need to bring my small backhoe down to Mass or Maine for personal use or let a friend "borrow" it for a day.

Also I will need to go to NJ a few times this year to help clean out my folks home.

I probably should just go get the stupid DOT physical and get the card just in case.

FATCAT, the original poster, described his activity as "most of my work will be within the state of NH... ... ... " Normally it would seem reasonable to assume that the word "work" probably means economic activity.

I don't remember exactly what he wrote now on an earlier thread about his reason for purchasing the new 4500 but my impression was that it was intended to be used for some type of commercial activity.

"But for me to signup for the BusinessLink plan I have to provide an EIN and declare myself a business (which I am not, I just do stuff underway ethay abletay orfay ashcay) if you know what I mean. BusinessLink would cause me a lot of greif with the you-know-who. ;)"

This is FATCAT's earlier post about how he will use his truck.

Doesn't sound like personal use to me.

Here is the link for your DOT application... . If you don't have an EIN than they accept your SS# in place of a EIN..... They require an renewal of this paper work every two years... . BTW - its free... I just got the renewal Friday and went on line and renewed ours today...

Registration & Assistance: USDOT Number/Operating Authority - Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

Remember there are a lot owner operators that have one truck and use their SS# for this application...

From what I see here I guess I just suggest that you get a part 49 rule book and read it..... and make up your own mind... .

The key is for commerce, or to make money... . once you cross that line you need to follow part 49 and your states other rules...

What is this "Part 49 Rule Book". I can not find it in any Google search.

Farm Plates

I could be wrong, and I'm sure someone will chime in to let me know. Here in Texas If you have farm plates on your tow vehicle as well as your trailer forget all that DOT BS. You are just a farmer movin' your equipment. That according to well versed friend is all ya' need.

49 CFR is the Federal Codes and Regulations for Commercial vehicles . . most states adaopt the 49CFR in there own state laws to enforce it. .

I know that the rules here in NH changed recently. Here at school we have a bunch of 15 passenger buses, on a E-350 or Chevy 3500 dually chassis. The GVWR on them is over 10,001 lbs, and they do have DOT numbers on the side. Until recently we had to have DOT med cards to drive them, but apparently we don't anymore - now all we need is a card signed by ourselves stating that we are in good health (like that means anything).

I do believe to transport children you have to have a CDL... again going back to part 49 that I'm not current on... if you have to have a CDL since your a commercial driver the med card would be required.....
