Ok guy's I'm writing this because I discovered a very irritating issue that I'm trying to repair or fix related to the paint on my truck. I advertise one of my home based businesses via magnetic signs on the side of my truck. Well I alternate taking them off here and there, when I wash the truck etc. . Today I noticed when I took the signs off to wash my CTD, there was a light grey patch where the sign was? :{ :( I tried wax, compound, everything shy of color sanding, which I know how to do since I was a detailer for a Ford dealer when I was in college, but I would rather not Colorsand because as most of you know it flattens the natural orange-peel out of the paint. Also it breaks the clear coat down considerably. Has anyone else had a similar issue? I wonder if it's the mineral grey metallic color? Greys & Reds generally break down faster than any other color on a vehicle. I'm serious the paint on my truck there now looks like a faded 15 year old buick, and my truck is just barely 1 year old.

I had the same issue with my 98 Dodge and its O. K. if you rotate the signs between the front and back doors it will go away, it is moisture traps in the paint or clearcoat or something, you can move the signs to your other doors or put a heater next to the spot on the truck and it will dry it out.

But dont sweat it, I was scared the first time it happened to me as well

Thank you, I feel a lot better now!

I think it's created by dust getting between the magnets and the paint. This works in there as the sign moves around slightly, thus scratching the paint.

I don't know if there's any way to get away from it if you want magnetic signs. I'd rather put vinyl lettering right on the paint, or make a wood sign that fits in the stake pockets of the bed.

I bought my truck from a dealer who took it on trade from a guy who owned a insulation company. Looked at and bought the truck on a cloudy day. The next day at work, one of my co-workers comes in and asks me "what does your truck say?" I was baffled at what he was asking me.

We go outside and sure enough, the p. o. had used vinyl lettering on the back doors and the clear coat was scuffed up everywhere the vinyl had not been. When the sun was at the right angle it reflected off of all of those little scratches allowing you to read perfectly the advertising! Fortunately the paint wasn't discolored and I just had to buff out the scratches in the clear.

My point to this whole thing is that if you are advertising on a painted surface there are always downsides!

I have kinda the same thing happen to me on my tail gate where I put my yellow support our troops magnet. It was on there for a few months and now there is a faded black spot where it once was.

Needless to say I moved it from my gate to my bumper. What would be the best way to restore the paint where the magnet was? It has been off for quite some time. I kinda though it was cheap dodge paint job but I guess it is more common than I thought

The issue that RJOHNSON916 spoke of is caused by using your magnetic signs in damp weather for long periods and it traps moisture in the paint/clearcoat either removeing the sign can eventually make it go away or do what I did and parked truck in the garage and put a space heater about 2ft from the door for about 4 hours and it went away, now I move my signs around so they dont always stick in same spot.

P. S. always make sure the backs of your magnetic signs are VERY clean to prevent vibration scratches

I do vinyl magnets for a living. Another thing to do, besides letting your paint breath, is to clean the magnet. Use rubbing alcohol to clean them. That left over moisture stays with the magnet when you take it off. As far as the fading, it will go away eventually with some washing, waxing, etc. But you also have to remember to clean your magnets as well. . 02¢

It is not just the paint on our trucks. I had the same problem more than 20 years ago on the company vehicles. At the time we were running Ford, GMC, & Jeep. driverno8 is correct in the proper way to deal with magnetic sings. That way they don't fall off either.

I don't think that is any problem on a truck as long as you have 2 outside mirrors. If you put a dump box on your truck, you'd totally block the back window.

I sell hundreds of vinyl stickers for back windows with Cummins slogans like "Duramax for Snax" and "Powerstrokes for Dinner" on Ebay and have never had one person say anything about trouble from the DOT.

That is very good for you. In NH, the Highway Patrol have been targeting back window stickers & visibility. Here unless you have a one tone truck with a US DOT number on your vehicle you must have vision through the back window. You can put some stickers on the back window, but you have to have a large are free of stickers. Or you get a ticket. It is different in differnt states. ;)
