My truck:

~ 250. 000 miles(speedo quit at 230K). Stock injectors, stock everything

I have the POD's, 16 cm housin, gauges; just been too darn busy to install...

Now the problem, last week, started excessively smoking, stumbles on start-up.

I need to:

1. adjust my valves

2. Install my POD's

Am I on the right track?

Agree/disagree

I doubt either will help the smoke. You mention that it 'just started'. My 93 truck has 440k miles and is stock as to the engine and has never had the valves adjusted. It does not smoke. I would suspect that you got some bad fuel and the filter is craped up. The only time mine has ever smoked was from bad fuel and clogged filter. (It will smoke black on that long hill comming into Culman Alabama from the west)

Jump in here someone. What else comes to mind.

Check lift pump. Mine died at 224,000 miles. truck smoked a lot coming back from trip. replaced filter and went to bleed it and pump lever did nothing. replacecd it and truck runs great

What color is the smoke?

When does smoke the most?

Define "stumble on startup" a little better.

Does the motor sound rough? Have a miss? power down?

Light Grey, black during moderate acceleration

Cold Startup

Engine feels rough, like its running on 5 cyinders

Motor does not sound rough cruising, just during cold idle. Low temp this morning was 50ºF.

If I had to guess, I'd say air is getting into the system from somewhere. Not enough to cause a stumble all the time but after the truck sits for a while, the pump may be losing its prime.

Does it stumble more the longer it sits?

Sounds like the injectors are in need of some TLC or as suggested air in the system. Run a boost test also and see if you don't have a bad boot or IC. Does the smoke clear up at WOT or when you get up to speed?

Filter didnt look bad at all. However the prime lever on the lift pump has NO resistance and does not spring back. Looks like the Cummins OEM lift pump lasted a whole 8 months.

If the cam has the pump in the load position, the lever will be dead. Bump the starter and try again. Do this a couple of times to be sure.

HMMM, lift pump prime lever is working. Must have been on the lobe. Anyways. This morning, after sitting 14 hours stumbled like it was running on 4 or 5 cylinders. Tommorow I will prime before starting and see if it is any different

My trucks have done this on occassion and then cleared up with no reason to start the problem or stop. If you don't have some place in the fuel supply system that is ingesting air, then my guess is that the injection pump is the culprit. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the innards of these pumps to hazard a guess as to why. I know that there will be a minor leak at the pump when my truck/s exhibit this problem. Maybe some one with extensive pump experience can jump in here.

UPDATE: Replaced the ~250K stock injectors with my Piers POD's. WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!

Slight haze at startip, not the smoke cloud I was getting at idle. Power is up. I am impressed

BTW. 2. 5 hours from start to finish, that includes the time to mod the slide hammer to pull #6. And thanks to whomever suggested doing 1-3, starting and then switching out 4-6!!!!
