I might buy this truck in the near future... . The owner lives in Cali and bought this truck from the original owner. . He said it has after market injectors and fuel plate. . I was wondering if anyone recognized it could give me some info on it... . It is a 1998 12 valve 4x4 dually 5spd... I was also wondering how to tell if the KDP has been fixed and the 5th gear nut if it has been fixed... . Also how do I tell if it is a egr truck or not?? What are the disadvantages of having egr??

I dont recognize the truck but I recognize the Hood!

Thats an Air Bulldog hood. Very nice.

That hood's a keeper, fully functional Dodge-Cummins specific. Don't think Doug is making a lot of them anymore. Been to his garage a couple times (actually an old quonset hut) where he made them (by hand, one at a time)

The engine clearly doesn't have EGR now, but it could be the last owner changed out the intake horn & exhaust manifold to get rid of it. You might be able to ID a Cali truck by the VIN if dealer were to run a build sheet on it for you.

I wouldn't buy any truck or car from anyone other then the original owner. That's the only that you will know anything about the vehicle. B S with the original owner while you kick the tires and look under the hood. It works for me.

What is that white plug looking thing in the third pic??? Does that have anything to do with egr??? Just wondering???

OK according to the vin it is not a california model with egr... . Now is there any way to tell if the KDP has been fixed, or the 5th gear nut?? Thanks for the responses... .

It depends on how the KDP was fixed as to if you would be able to "see" the fix. There may be a plug in the case next to the KDP, but if they took the cover off to do it you would never be able to see it. I don't know of any way to just look to check the fifth gear nut, without pulling the t-case and rear housing.

I think when i get it I will just go ahead and pull the cover to see if it was tabbed if I dont see the bolt in the side of the housing..... What will happen to the transmission if the nut fails???? Will it do further transmission damage or just damage what needs to be replaced??? Also if I do decide to pull the transfer case what do I look for to see if it were upgraded???? Thanks for the replys... .

If the nuts "fails" it doesn't actually break anything. What happens is the nut unthreads off the back of the main shaft and lets the fifth gear slide back also. When this happens the fifth gear doesn't enagage and you lose fifth gear. You can still drive without fifth gear, I did once when I couldn't lose the truck for a few days. The only damage I saw was that the nut rubbed against the back of the seal.

There are different ways to fix the fifth gear problem. The way with the fully splined mainshaft I'm not familiar with. The nuts have been upgraded by the addition of set screws. I made my own upgrade by taking the stock nut and drilling and tapping for set screws on each side of the nut. When I put the nut back on I used Locktite on the shaft and the set screws.

In the first picture the fifth gear nut is just in front of the green for the speedometer synchro. The nut is not a hexagonal nut, but is round with notches. The first pic is of a 2 wheel drive transmission, the second pic is of a 4 wheel drive and has a shorter rear housing that the t-case bolts directly to.

Did your nut back off or did the threads on the nut strip? All the ones I have heard about the threads ar gone on the nut.

Well I bought the plane ticket to fly out ther on Friday... . I plan on driving it home... . I'm excited this is gonna be my first 12 valve... .

Not a problem at all I will be home some time on Sat or Sun I will take the pics then. .

Michael. .

The intake was plumbed back into the factory air box. The cold air ducts on the hood both swept right and fed the cold air ductwork. It was a very neat setup and very fuctional. Its a shame that Doug quit making this hood.

Both Keystone and Cervini's make a hood with the functional ram air style inlets. Keystone has both fiberglass and steel and Cervini's is fiberglass only. Carhoods.com also has a Firebird WS6 ram Air style hood for our Dodges that is functional... ..... Andy

Here is the web address for the Cervini Catalog. Its in PDF form. I also know they have the SRT-10 style hood scoops available for the 2nd Gen trucks as I have a friend who has one on his diesel.

Page 53 in their catalog.

The other places are as follows.....

Custom Hoods / Guaranteed Lowest Prices !

Truck SUV

Keystone Restyling Home of the Genuine Good Hood (look in the Good Hoods area here for the Dodges)

Hope this helps some... ... Andy
