Axle Vent Service

I recently serviced my axle vent. Big deal you say. If it should plug, problems can develop. It's there for a reason isn't it?

All that involved is removal and cleaning out the vent/hose/fitting.

I had trouble removing the hose clamp. You'll want a spare if you bugger it up. I replaced mine.

I could not pull the hose from the fitting. I used a razor knife (had to ask my wife's permission)to cut slit in the hose to loosen it from the nipple. (Can I say that on here?) I found "gunk" inside the fitting in the axle. Clean it with a piece of wire. Mine looked like moisture/rust/oil.

I then blew out the hose and vent. I Cut off about 1/2" inch of hose where I slit it and reinstalled the assembly w/new hose clamp.

I should have done this when I service my diff. Better late than never I always say... ... .

Scott, can this be done without draining the diff fluid? What exactly is plugged up, the vent, hose or fitting on the axle? I've replaced the plastic vents, I'm assuming thats what were talkin bout the plastic piece on the top of the hose, and I still get the HISSS of air when I remove the fill plug. I've been removing the plug probly once a month or so to let the built up air out... Bill

Thanks for the heads up Greenleaf. I just ordered a MagHiTech rear end cover from Piers and I'll service the vent when I put it on.

b,

The fitting on the axle will plug. You will need to pull the hose, nothing more. The breather cap is placed up high, under the bed. That shouldn't plug, unless you get mud up in there.

The build up of pressure isn't good. That's why you hear the hiss. The axle/pinion lip seals are not designed to withhold pressure, however, they will to an extent, prior to leaking or blowing out.

Clean it.
