I decided to clean my powersteering inlet screen, a good idea, it was seriously clogged.

Now I cant get the PS pump to prime. This hapened once before and I cant remember how I got it to reprime.

Thanks, truck is DOA. :(

Problem solved :) Took about 15 minutes to figure it out this AM.

The screen was completely clogged. Did the spring mod too.

No more growl and can turn wheels lock to lock with one finger on dry pavement.

Not bad for the investment of 2 qts of fluid :D

My original thread is here where I first posted about discovering the screen:

http://turbodieselregister.com/foru...047&highlight=possible+low+power+steering+fix

In that thread someone else mentions the spring that needs to be stretched to 2-2&1/4". Its the big spring behind the pressure regulator body.

Tools needed: 18mm Line wrench, 1" socket & ratchet, skinny manget ( <1/2" inch diameter ) the tool trucks give away a magnet / screwdriver. That is what I used. ViceGrip pliars and 10MM socket and ratchet, I prefer a 6 point.

Procedure:

1. remove the high pressure line from the PS pump with the 18mm line wrench, it is the bottom most line on the pump. Lay on back and get PS fluid in face. Bang head on frame cross member because you are *surprised* that the PS pump is full of fluid and it drains on your face as you lay under it. Invent new cuss words.

2. remove the 1" fluid distribution thing from the PS pump (this is what the 18mm high pressure line is attached too) I used a 1" socket with a universal joint and ratchet from the top side. Not fun.

3. use the magnet in the hole to pull out the regulator. Note the the skinny end (with the screen) goes towards the front of the truck on reassembly (dont ask how I know).

4. use the magnet again in the same hole to pull out the spring. Stretch spring about 1/2" ONLY IF YOUR TRUCK CANT GO LOCK TO LOCK ON DRY PAVEMENT, SOME DONT NEED THIS STEP.

5. dissemble the regulator. The body is hardened so use a pair of vise grips on the body and a 10mm socket to remove the nut with the spring inside. ***Use the vice grips on the inner body, not the larger rings, they are designed to act as piston rings and form a seal in the bore*** Note the order it comes apart. Spring,T-post, ball, nut. Clean the screen by spraying cleaner from the inside.

------------

6. reassemble the regulator

7. put big spring back in PS pump followed by the regulator.

8. put 1" fluid dstribution thingy back in the PS pump

9. reconnect the 18mm high presure line.

10. refill with ATF4 or whatever you choose.

11. start engine and test steering (I've only had it fail to reprime itself twice in 5 years)

12. post thread in the 911 forum about how to reprime the PS pump

*OR*

skip 12 and do this: Trace the 18mm high pressure line to the hydroboost (the thing directly under where you add BRAKE fluid. Remove the line and clean. Suck on the line to pull air out of PS pump internals so it can prime. Get ATF4 in mouth and invent new cuss words. Reconnect line to hydroboost. Start engine and top off fluid. Note: it may take a few hours for all th bubbles to rise out of the PS fluid.

13. marvel that the PS system no longer growls and the steering assist is 50% greater. Wonder why you put this off for a year. marvel that the dealers will just replace the PS pump because of a clogged screen.

14. add a magnafine PS fluid filter (3/8" model-$20) to the return line from the hydroboost so you never have to do this again. The two return lines are the low pressure ones that attach to the PS pump with hose clamps. The other return line comes from the steering box.

15. get up at 4AM and post the whole procedure on the TDR because you dont have a life and your FREE dog had $700 worth of surgery yesterday and is keeping you awake by moaning, despite the pain pills.

Note: I dont understand how stretching the big spring can increase line pressure, it doesnt seem possible. But since I had it out I decided to try it. I would think line pressure is set by the little spring inside the pressure regulator.

Sweet!

Thank you Texas Diesel!!! I didn't realize my power steering could be so quiet! That spring mod really does work. Much better with a plow on the front end. Now I just gotta figure out why I still have a 3" dead spot in my steering after putting my 3 turn box in... .

I am busy this weekend hopefully next weekend i will have time to work on mine . 1 st. time using chat line for repair problems, thank for all infoOo.

Of course, 3rd generation are completely different.

I have fixed several trucks by cleaning the inlet screen only. And I have heard that many others have had success too and been spared buying a new PS pump.

My 3500 has not growled (cavitated) once since having the screen cleaned.

I didnt see a screen in your pics of your 3rd generaton PS pump. Does it have one?

This is one of the places I go to get help. Chances are, someone has already had the problem you are working on and knows how to fix it. :-laf
