Just curious what anyone else might think. I had a few too many a while ago and started opening my mouth :-{} about how my CTD could outpull a couple of Ford owners. One was a 97 F250 4x4 SRW A/T (w/chip but not sure which one) The other was a 04 F350 4x4 DRW A/T (also w/chip but not sure which one). Do you think I would have won if I was in 4 low in first gear on crushed asphalt? Or would we have just ripped each other's receivers off. Luckily my friends were sober enough to pull me away and I didn't take the chance of tearing my truck or tires up. :-laf

Well, that Log bed in your signature might have just put enough extra weight over the rear wheels to let you "pull" it off! (Just a joke!) ;) :D

Ya probably would have got the 97, not to sure about the 04. Theres alot more to it than weight and traction. If one truck is taller sometimes makes a difference (angle the strap or chain is hooked at). I had a buddy in college thought my truck wasn't very tough, needless to say I drug him all over the parking lot with all 4 of his wheels spinning.

ndurbin, what was he driving? Your buddy in school? I get a kick out of these gasser drivers that think diesels don't have any power. Your story proves they do!

He had a 80s model Chevy 3/4 ton w/ a 454. He kept saying afterwards "If my truck weighed the same it'd be different. " I was like "Ok fine, lets go weigh them and do it again. " Needless to say we never tied bumpers again. I imagine we were pretty close to the same weight already since a CTD doesn't have to much more on a 454. He did drag me alil ways but that was after I put it in neutral.

Theres was another kid around school that had an 01 or 02 CTD 5 spd. I was itchin to get him to tie bumpers but he never would. I'd have killed him tho.

I wouldn't recommend this type of pull. Usually one or both trucks jump about twice and drop their rear axle in the dirt :{ Been there done that. :-laf With stock 5'' lift blocks and the little skinny 1/2 inch u-bolts, they will break. The auto will usually survive against a standard model. Poping the clutch with no load to hold the springs down tight on the lift blocks will usually result in breakage.

That sounds about right. Good thing I was dragged away from that one. It's nice having friends that are smarter than you are when you've had a little too much to drink. :-laf

Just the axle wrap without a set of traction bars will break the u-bolts. I have not tried this trick with my 01 Dodge, but all the different spacer blocks, axle, springs, overloads, and top & bottom caps, the u-bolts are about 16" long. With about a 4" mounting surface on the spring perch and about a 16" u-bolt, the torque twist of the axle against the 16" u-bolts is tremendous. About 20 years ago, I did this with my 1979 Ford Bronco w/auto against my brother's 1978 F-250 4x4 w/standard. He had tall spacers and long u-bolts also. With his big tires and high traction of dry pavement he twisted the axle right out from under his truck. I like the looks of the 3rd-gen trucks rear spring mounts. The spring mounts lower on the frame, with about a 1" spacer to get the same height, u-bolts are about 4" shorter.
