Kink of the hill?????

cummins vs. duramax

Well yesterday I decided to drop down to my local dodge dealer to pick up a fuel filter cartridge for my 2001 Ram.

Now keep in mind this is my first fuel filter change.

I told the parts guy... give me a couple of them..... he pulls the info up on his computer ... then asks... "you sure you want 2 of them?" He tells me they are $64. 90 Cdn each !!!!! Thats about $42. 00 US.

I took only one... . and once I got back to my shop I then phoned Cummins and was told they are $18. 25 Cdn which is about $12. 50 US. Now I can see how these dealerships can afford to build fancy showrooms with all that glass and polished aluminum. I guess it pays to shop around.....

No surprise.....

You think that's bad, you shoulda asked the idiot what they charge to change the fuel filter for you. (including parts and labor)

My local stealer wanted $99! :--)

If I can give you one word of advice, that would be: STAY AWAY FROM THE STEALER! #@$%!

the fuel filter thing has been debated here before, a lot. Before buying parts at the stealer, do a seach, might save you grief and hard earned $$$

Glenn

I purchased one of Geno's kits with 4 oil filters, 2 fuel filters, and and an air filter for 75. 00. And they are Fleetguard.

A dealer I used here at one time charged $15. 00 for the service and $43. 95 for the filter :{ That is before I knew better  But that is still way better than some of you are being quoted :(

With my new truck I got some coupons $$$ off service and I have used the first one for oil and filter change. Took in my own Stratpore filter and they did the oil and the lube and the change. Quite a saving :) I plan on taking in a fuel filter that I bought from Geno's and using a coupon on my first fuel filter change. Dealer is cool about it. Some are good and some are real $$$ expensive. I don't have a problem with a dealer making a profit, they just don't need to make all of their profit for the week on my transaction ;)

Yeh, a CKP sensor at the dealer was 57$. 37$ at Cummins dealer. I won't buy anthing unless necessary at a dealer.

My grandpa had the same problem when he went to the Ford dealer to get a fuel filter for his Powerstroke. Stealer wanted $45 for it. He got one at Farm & Fleet for around $20. Looked like it was even made by the same company, just in a different box.

And now you know not to do that again:eek: Back when I had a 91 I was changing my oil and then figured out that I was out of oil filters(fleetguard)so I went to the dealer:confused: and was charged double what I had been getting them from a truck shop.

yikes..... 2001 and this is your first fuel filter change! you must get clean fuel out there in your part of the world... ... .

Actually after I took out the old filter... . I cleaned the water sensor and was surprised at how clean the canister was. I was kinda expecting to see some kind of sediment on the bottom. The fuel that I pre-drained into a 500 ML bottle looked good to.

Maybe I was just lucky..... but trust me... plan on doing a fuel filter change on every other oil change.

I also make sure I buy my fuel at brand name dealers... Sunoco. . Shell... etc.

You must be lucky, I always try and buy at a high volume (truck stops) dealer as apposed to a primarly gas station.

Name brands are good but fuel that sits for a long time is gambling in my book, and around here that means crud, and water... ...

That . 02 from me and . 73 more will get you a cup of coffee... ... ... .

And on top of all that parts price gouging, they'll sell you a vehicle that will lose 60% of its value in the first 4 years--they'll even let you pay interest for that opportunity.
