I've got a question for all you guys who know more about oil than I do. (which is about everybody) I have been running delo but truck now has 16000 so sometime in the next 6 months or so I will be switching to synthetic.

In the new issue of tdr page72 dodge prefers if we use synthetic to use 5w-40. So what weight synthetic are you guys using? I was planning on using amsoil series 3000 5w-30 any comments?

Mobile One comes in 5w40 and I am switching to that for my Ram. It is for Diesel use. Been using Amsoil 15w40 HD Diesel and Marine and no problems but it is dificult to find where I live. I have used Mobile One for 16 years in my Nissan 4 banger changing every 25k. Have 211k on it and expect to get more. Used Mobile One 15w50 in my motorcycles when I still rode. I saw 260k on a motorcycle and he could have got more but he wanted a new one. A friend put 100k on an old air head boxer and used only Mobile One. He tore it down thinking it needed a lot of new parts. It needed none but as long as it was apart he put in new rings. The secret is that synthetic oil does not break down. Use a by-pass filter (2 micron) and chance only the filters and add only the oil lost in the filter change and one million miles is not unrealistic. The 18 wheelers are doing it.

I ran my new 2006 to 25000 miles on Rotella 15W-40 then switched to Rotella 5W-40 Synthetic. 1-2% milage improvement and everything seems fine. I'll do an oil sample at 10k probably change around 20K. I use the Fleetguard Stratopore Filters too.

I've been using the Amsoil 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine since my first CDT in 1991. I did use the Heavy Duty Diesel 5W-30 for about two years in my 94 CTD, and it did get about 1-1/2 MPG better, but then I sold the truck for the 03' I now have. Either one of these oils meets ALL the Cummins specs. and should be fine if that is what you want to run in your truck.

I do not believe 5w30 is for diesels. 5w40 is OK if it is formulated for turbo diesels. Protecting the turbo is as important as protecting the engine. You may have noticed the oil line that runs from the top of the oil filter to the turbo. When the filter is changed the new filter should be filled (almost full) of oil to make sure the turbo bearings are not without oil on initial start up. Synthetic oil does not break down which makes it ideal when you have turbo bearings feeding off the oil system.

I never stated 5w 30:confused::confused:

We have farm tractors with diesel engines that use straight 30 weight. You can use 5W30 Diesel Engine rated oil in a Cummins as long as it meets certain specifications. As long as it meets all the applicable CI-4 specifications, and has a High Temperature/High Shear Viscosity, cP, 150°C, 1. 0 x 106 s-1 (ASTM D-4683) at or above 3. 5 cSt, it's acceptable, per Service Bulletin Number 3810340-04 dated 6 January 2004.

"... Cummins Inc. has required that all xW30 oils registered under CES 20078 (API CI-4) must meet the minimum High Temperature / High Shear viscosity of 3. 5 cSt. These can be used over a wider temperature range than other 10W30 or 5W30 oils. As these oils will have directionally thinner oil films than 15W40 oils, top quality Fleetguard®* filters must be used above 20°C [70°F]. See Figure 1 for viscosity recommendations. " See at link Cummins Engine Oil Recommendations

*Note (Magnusson Moss Act): Cummins can't require you to use Fleetguard filters, but if your filter isn't at least as good as Fleetguard, you put yourself at risk.

Hello Gentleman

It always amaze's me. People spend tens of thounands of $$ on there trucks and quibble about the cost of oil. Quality is my main concern. I use LE,Luberication Engineers Oil 15-40. This product is tops for me. I have used most oils on the market and this product has never failed me. I have lived in the heat of the desert in Texas and the cold climates of Colorado and Maine.

I perform oil analysis failthfully and doing so will tell the real story of the

product you choose. No one can do this but you.

If you try LE, youll never wonder about your choice.

Thanks,

JL

5W-40 Rotella-T Synthetic here, 2 yrs now, oil analysis every other change, change every 10,000 miles, no problems, slight gain in mileage, slight engine temp decrease of about 5 deg. Fleetguard stratapore oil filter, and no price can be put on good maintenance. :)

I run the same as hotram03.
